Drinking water at Ringgold Middle School was off limits on Wednesday.
Catoosa County Director of Schools Doug Suits says the school officials arrived in the morning to a notice on the door.
"The city of Ringgold is required by law to post a notice anytime they're doing work on a line to the residents that were being affected," said Suits.
The city had been doing work on a fire hydrant that could compromise the schools tap water.
"The precautions on the notice says not to drink the water unless you boil it and so we took those precautions in the kitchen and be sure everything was boiled in preparation of the food. And the principal and administration asked students not to drink the water out of the fountains," Suits said.
. Suits says they didn't notify the parents about the issue because they had the situation under control.
"If it had been a serious issue concerning the water, the administration would have contacted the parents immediately," said Suits.
