Chattanooga-(WDEF) Rob Spence has spent the last 25 plus years coaching college football, including stints as the offensive coordinator at both Clemson and Syracuse.
But next fall, he's returning to high school football to coach at Chattanooga Christian.
When Rob Spence lost his job as Rutgers quarterbacks coach after last season, he was ready for a new chapter in his life.
"I really had this burning desire to go back to my roots. And go back and really make some meaningful connections with high school players."
But how does a New York native land in Chattanooga?
"I had been looking around for the right place for quite some time. I did find it on the internet. I thought the mission of the school was what I was looking for, and so there was an immediate connection."
Given Spence's college resume, CCS athletic director John Visser was a bit skeptical when Spence showed interest in the Chargers job.
"When you read a resume like that, you step back and say, what is your interest in coming back to high school and all of that. From my perspective, it was truly God sent. Yeah I didn't have any problems getting anybody to call his references."
Reporter-"Who were some of his references?"
Said Visser,"Georgia's head coach. Bowden. Those were the type of references we didn't have any problems getting called."
When Spence coached at Toledo, he picked up the nickname of the 'Mad Scientist'.
"I was always wanting to go study other people and what they did. We were not afraid to try something different. There's probably close to 1,500 pounds of books and playbooks and information in my house right now that's packed up and ready to go to come down here.
Now Spence will try to lead a program that hasn't enjoyed a winning record since starting up football in 2009.
Said Spence,"Every single undertaking has it's own unique issues. It's own unique challenges. This brings with it some of that. That's what makes the job fun."
