SEQUATCHIE COUNTY, TN, (WDEF)-Josh Layne was a shy family man to those along East Valley Road.
But yesterday he opened fire on officers who were attempting to serve him a warrant for aggravated assault.

"The Police officers from what I understand a good bit of them went to school, they knew him, so this isn't an absent relationship they knew one another"

Pastor Doug Silvers says his thoughts and prayers are with Josh's three young children at this time.

"Aside from any debate we want to have about gun violence, there is a family right now that is grieving a terrible loss and there are children that don't have a father anymore"

There is a possibility that Josh could be buried at Welch Chapel a matter of miles from where the gun battle ensued as his family are directly associated with the church.

A close relative who would like to remain anonymous spoke to News 12 by phone earlier today.

"Josh was a great guy, a great father, we really hate it for his children and his parents they are taking it tough but they are strong they are very grounded in their faith"

Just a few miles down the road members of a local Presbyterian Church say they will be holding prayer sessions for both the officers and families involved.

Jimmy Byrd, New Hope Cumberland Presbyterian Church,"Definitely a shock to us here in the community it's very peaceful here, something like this is out of the ordinary"

No deputies were injured in the shoot out yesterday but one police car had to be towed away after Layne sprayed it with bullets when confronted at his trailer home.

The Sheriff's office were unavailable for comment today,
an investigation is ongoing and the TBI are also involved.
