SOUTH PITTSBURG (WDEF)--South Pittsburg Elementary teachers set up shop at Wal-Mart hoping the community will help them get back in the classroom.
"When we heard about the flood damage we thought if we can't take time off to come down and help clean up we can at least raise some money and some funds for the students as well as the teachers," said South Pittsburg alum Monica Stevens.
"I know that there were a lot of teachers that had to have the tiles replaced in their class rooms. The baseboard lining that goes around the classroom, the gym received the most damage that floor having to be completely taken up, just mainly the floor with the tiles having to be taken up and replaced," added Paula Talley, a teacher at SPES.
Teachers hope that damage will be replaced in time for them to get back to the classroom and get ready for school registration.
"The teachers are hoping to get back in the building Monday. The Superintendent has to come give his all clear, teachers are hoping to be able to get back in the building once we've got that all clear from the Superintendent," said Talley.
They say so far the community is coming to the rescue.
"It's going really well so far, we've raised quite a bit of money and got quite a bit of supplies so the community is rallying together, people we don't even know are coming out here giving us money so it is just very heart warming," added Stevens.
Money that will finally get the ball rolling on an eagerly awaited school year.
"I want to get to school in time because I want to see my friends again and i don't see them a lot in the summer," said 4th grader Jamey Talley.
