WHITFIELD COUNTY, GA, (WDEF)-"I used to live in Virginia and heard all the way in Virginia if you wanted a job come to Dalton Georgia and it has really swung."

Business owner and Property Manager Michael Doran says Whitfield County needs help sooner rather than  later.

"There just aren't very many jobs, i know people even veterans and everyone who are really hurting, out of work, still some of the major employers are laying people off, people doing away with departments its real crunch time."

The status change according to local elected officials now puts Whitfield County as the poorest region north of Atlanta on i75.

Brian Anderson, CEO of Dalton Chamber of Commerce,"Dropping of our per capita income, loss of two income households and have dropped into what is seen as the lowest tier of economic activity"

Anderson says the new tier 1 status will allow the area to maximize new tax credits, to bring infrastructure back into Whitfield county.

"Food processing companies, chemical companies in addition, we will continue to work hard with these sectors, this extra 500 dollars and the ability to put those tax credits to withholding will enable us to be more competitive"

While there is some doom and gloom surrounding Dalton right now, Mohawk, Engineered Floors and Shaw say they will create over 2000 jobs in the coming years.

Mike Babb Chairman of Whitfield County says the worst is now over.

"Our rankings and these tiers are based on information that is delayed information, we are going to tier one based on information that happened last year"

Babb urges Whitfield County residents to not give up, as Dalton and Whitfield County will bounce back and return to tier 2 and possibly 3 status with time.

Whitfield joins Murray and Chattooga counties in the tier 1 category.
