16-Year-Old Student Shot to Death at Knoxville High School
A shooting at a Knoxville High School Thursday morning leaves a 16-year-old student dead.
The shooting in the cafeteria at Central High School was reported to police at about 8:10.
Police say they took a suspect into custody six-minutes later near the school -- and recovered the gun.
Knoxville Chief Deputy Bill Roehl said the shooting was not a random act, "We found through our initial inquiries, that both the suspect and the victim knew each other. We don't know the particulars as to why it actually escalated into the situation that occurred today."
Police are not yet releasing their identities.
The school was placed on lockdown after the shooting.
School officials later released students one classroom at a time, then bused them to a church so their parents could pick them up.
