Bowater Idling Two Machines in Calhoun as Company Reduces Capacity
More Tennessee Valley workers face losing their jobs as Bowater announces plans to close or idle at least four paper mills in response to falling demand.
The newsprint maker says it will idle until further notice two paper machines at the Bowater plant in Calhoun.
It employs about 900 people, but there's no word yet on how many might lose their jobs.
The company also plans to idle its Alabama River newsprint mill and close a paper converting facility in Covington, Tennessee.
Demand for its newsprint products fell over 18-percent last month.
The cuts will affect about 1,100 employees in the U.S. and Canada.
