Car Crash in North Chattanooga Caused by Man Seeking Mental Health Treatment
The strange crime spree began at Quality Tire Center, Inc. on Cherokee Boulevard Tuesday just before noon. Mechanic Rick Posey tells us he was in the garage when he heard fellow mechanic Stan Breeden yell, "Get away from there!" He ran outside to see Breeden with his arm around the neck of the man trying to steal his car. "It's a wonder he didn't smash Stan in between that truck and that car," Posey recalls. "He did two donuts and then threw Stan off under there and about ran over me. So I got around to the passenger side and got ahold of the door and got it open and was trying to get in the door and that's when he took off up through here and threw me off."
Breeden's blood splattered on the ground near the truck he was thrown under. After David Wilkey left the garage, he headed down Cherokee Boulevard into the intersection at Manufacturers Road. Joe Page saw the incident unfurl. "He came through the red light sideways and crashed into cars and then was trying to break windows out of other cars," said Page. After he crashed the initial car, police tell us he tried to break the windows of a Mustang parked in the lot near the crash site. That's when Joe page wrestled him to the ground. "I didn't want him to steal somebody else's car and run over somebody," Page explained about why he tackled Wilkey. "I guess it's not part of the job." Posey recalls how quickly it all happened. There wasn't much time to think I tell you. Just react. Wilkey became agitated and left the Joe Johnson Mental Health Center right before he stole the car. He and Breeden were taken to Erlanger Medical Center. No one else was hurt. "If he'd went on up the street 2 blocks there's no telling what could have happened," said Page.
According to Sgt. Jerri Weary of the Chattanooga Police Department, no charges have been filed yet but they are likely after Wilkey's evaluation.
