A Chattanooga police officer finds himself suspended tonight for an incident late last month.
Police Chief Freeman Cooper took disciplinary action against Detective Kenneth Freeman.
An internal review of an incident at the Collegedale Wal-mart found Freeman exhibited conduct unbecoming of an officer, improper procedure, and excessive use of force. Sgt. Jerri Weary says "as police officers we're always on duty. The mere fact it could have and should have been handled in a different way was grounds enough for the conduct unbecoming."
Freeman reportedly pushed an elderly greeter who wanted to see his receipt.
Along with a 28-day suspension without pay, Freeman must be retrained in the use of force policy and take anger management and verbal judo courses before rejoining the force.
He will also move from the Detective division to Patrol, a lateral move.
How he got away with it.

The reason freakman got away with this is one word.COP!!A city cop with a gun and badge can do what they want when they want to who ever they want to.Because they have a badge and gun.I live in cleveland tn.Our city cops are so corrupt and dirty it sucks. Some were dealing drugs from their patrol cars.Messing with under age kids. But they got busted when the FBI came in.And that is what needs to happen with this. The FBI needs to get a hold of it.Because tennessee city police department is crooked. If walker would have been a younger man.And when freeman knocked him to the ground. If walker would have got up and defended himself and whipped freemans ass. Then walker would have got the hell beat out of him and thrown in jail.So whats the problem. The gun and badge make it right. How much was the jury payed to say no case.Because no one could see that and say freeman is not guilty.Freeman is going to hurt some one really bad one day.Do they not know that this is why kids grow up to hate the law and have no respect for them.My 9 year girl says daddy that is not right. They are suppose to be out there to help us.Not beat us up.It makes me sad and mad.Because I have always taught my kids to respect a man or woman in uniform. But when this happens. What can you tell them. What he did was wrong.Cop or no cop.He should pay.And I bet you his son will get in no trouble for the armed robbery he done.So you better watch out their might be another freeman on the force before long.Like father like son.But how he got away with it is easy.It is gun badge and the word cop.

Reason he got away with it
Submitted by Guest (not verified) on May 25, 2009 - 3:58am.
Reason he got away with it b/c Police & Court & Gov systems are all corrupt. Some one needs to step up & do the right thing fire this Disgrace of a Human being & throw his ass in jail where he belongs. I do not & would not feel safe with someone like him on the street. If this is what you get when you call 911 for help forget it I'll deal with the problem myself. This guy does not deserve to call himself a cop.
We need some Judges & Law makers that can handle their own jobs & do what needs done, Fire this piece of sh**.
Are they blind did you not see the video tape; Do you really think we need scum like this as cops? There are plenty of people out there willing to take his place & do a good job.
freeman & the other cop with him both need an ass beating & to be fired worthless pieces of crap.

You should really try to learn the basics of correct grammar and correct spelling before you comment on a news website.

This person needs to be
Submitted by Guest (not verified) on March 12, 2009 - 10:38am.
This person needs to be fired, I will not even call him a Police MAN, because he is not a Man. He is a black police officer that can and will get by with anything,he has 27 other problems in his file that he has done. It seems that because he is Black, that the city is afraid to do anything, now his son is holding up people with guns, is he going to walk also? He must be stopped before he hurts someone else, sounds like he has a short fuse and he has no right to be a man of the law. You can bet that if a white person had pushed him, that person would have been arrested for sure.

I think that remark is so
Submitted by Guest (not verified) on August 17, 2009 - 9:21pm.
I think that remark is so ignorant. If this was a black man who had been pushed by a white man, it probably would not have even made the 6 o'clock news. I don't say that Det. Freeman was right for what he did but I did some searching myself and most people I talked to that shops at this wal-mart said the man is annoying and he follows you around and if you don't answer him he puts his hands on you. If this be the case, the greeter put his hands on Det. Freeman then I say he had a right to defend himself. People in the world (young & old) are crazy and need to realize that you can't go around touching, harrassing, or pushing other people. I think they both are at fault but because this is an officer it has been blown out of porportion.

Officer with Freeman
Submitted by Guest (not verified) on February 1, 2009 - 8:09pm.
What is the officer's name who was with officer Freeman at walmart? I think his name should be made public. Should he be charged for not making an arrest when the assault took place? Do we have officers like that in our schools? Wonder how officer Freeman would feel if someone treated his grandfather with the same respect?Shouldn't most any man at 71 years old should be treated with more respect than a dog? Mr Freeman do you often treat others with the same manner of respect? Is that the manner in which you handle all of your arrest cases? Can this case be appealed to a higher court with a jury to see the video? Mr Freeman how do you think a jury trial would sound? Would some of the law enforcement officers it really doesn't matter where you work, tell us how you see this type of behavior from a brother officer? Does anyone feel like it supplies a good image on the law enforcement community? Will this really hurt the city if it is allowed to be swept under the rug? Has the mayor made any comment on this kind of performance from a city officer? Why is Officer Freeman still employed with such a long list of complaints with department? Personally I think they are many questions that should have been and still do need be answered.

Submitted by Guest (not verified) on February 5, 2009 - 4:13pm.
Edwin McPherson. He's also known as Daryl McPherson. He's worst then Freeman. He's been protected for a long time by the higher ups. He must have some dirt on some local politicians. It'll all come to light!!!

Officer Freeman
Submitted by Tom Coyle (not verified) on January 31, 2009 - 11:24pm.
The real sad part is that the local police refused to act. It is their job to react to an assault. If it had been anyone except a cop that pushed a Walmart employee down that person would have been in front of the judge. Then the judge, Wilson, decides that the complaint has no merit. The Collegedale police stink. They covered up for a fellow officer.
Freeman should be on suspension but it should be pending the outcome of a trial. If he is found guilty of assault then he should pay the price of his actions. He won't come to trial because the Collegedale police and Judge Wilson covered up. Anyone but a cop would be in Hamilton County jail now awaiting trial.
Police carry guns even off duty. As such they are accountable for their actions. They are trained how to defuse a situation. I don't think that the officer displayed the kind of conduct I would like to see from a person armed with a gun. But that is for a court to decide.

TBI Investigating Chatt. Policeman
Submitted by Mike (not verified) on January 31, 2009 - 9:58am.
What if the store greeter had have been a little ole woman would he have pushed her as well? Does he think that becauses he is a local police officer he is above the law? Who is responsible for only giving Mr. Freeman only 28 days off? If the next time Mr. Freeman blows his stack again and a child is nearby, is the Chattanooga Police Department going to step foward and say we should have? Now is the time don't wait, a police officer is on the job 24 / 7 / 365 they should never conduct themselves in this maner. What kind of message does this send out for our children in the area? How do the other officers that are on their beats everyday feel about this kind of action from their detectives? Someone in authority should have considered more is at stake than retirement and benefits for one immature buddy. I feel certian Mr. Freeman has friends in high places within the police department but the buddy systems is not the place for criminal behavior
concealment. How would the average Chattanooga Police Department Officer have reacted if they had been standing in the area and seen this incident take place with the average John Doe citizen behaving as Mr Freeman did? Would John Doe have gotten a free ride? Mr. Freeman maybe a great dad and a real good person but he took a job with the knowledege of the responsibilities Mr. Freeman knew a year ago the that kind of action is not fair to his brothers in blue. These men and women have a tough job without this kind of juvenile stunt from their leadership. Billy Long had friends in high places but when it is time to leave you might want to consider somewhere less stressful.

Fire this piece of trash!!
Submitted by Disgusted (not verified) on January 30, 2009 - 3:55pm.
I already wrote the mayor regarding this matter. Not holding my breathe on a reply.
Bottom line; This piece of trash needs to be axed!! IMMEDIATELY! But he won't. You know why? I'll tell you why!!
He's a detective. Which means he's in a senior position. He's more than likely politically affiliated. He's probably within a reasonable time frame for retirement. He/they need to protect his seniority, pension, benefits, etc.
This is a bunch of hogwash! We're I to push a Chattanooga officer to the ground, I would probably be fined no less then $1000, be sentenced to no less then 30 days in jail, and no doubt, lose my job no matter who/where I was employed. Not to mention that "reinforcements" would kick the living S**T out of me!! So why does Freeman get away with it?
OH WAIT!! I know why!! Because Wal-Mart employee Bill Walker "assaulted" Freeman by PLACING HIS HAND ON HIM!! What a crock!
Just reinforces the lack of faith that most have in law enforcement these days. And then they (law enforcement) wonder why so many cringe at the site of the police or detest them. Unbelievable!!!!

Officer Freeman should be fired
Submitted by Guest (not verified) on January 29, 2009 - 7:14am.
Why is this man not fired. He's to "Protect and Serve". He embarrased every office on the force. He's putting other officers at risk because people look at this incident and say, "this is the way all officers act". He should be FIRED! Where is the justice? This is his second incident. Why is the CPD covering for this loose cannon? If he got "caught" assaulting three people already, how many incident went unreported? The city and CPD are putting themselves at risk of lawsuits in the future should this "savage loose cannon" go off and really hurt someone badly or worse, kill someone. When will it end? FIRE HIM NOW! Or fire the mayor. We demand justice not another cover-up!

Kenneth Freeman, loose cannon
Submitted by JT (not verified) on January 28, 2009 - 7:41pm.
I think the punnishment was to excessive.
If Freeman had gone into the store as a detective then yes punnish him. But if he went into the store as a regular citizen then the punnishment did not fit the deed. I won't call it a crime since that would have required him going before a judge. I think that what Wal-Mart is doing is ok but there are no signs posted to the fact that people will have their carts checked if they have unbagged items in it. Therefore Freeman was not being totally unreasonable in his actions.

you think hitting an old man
Submitted by Guest (not verified) on February 4, 2009 - 6:45pm.
so hard on the concrete floor that he blacks out for a moment and soils himself is fine because he was in there as a regular citizen? Wait until you turn 71 and see how you feel about it then. And yes, this IS what happened to Mr. Walker, if you read the reports. Freeman didn't just push him down, he really assaulted him. And that IS "unreasonable" for someone of any age.

You are an idiot! The damned
Submitted by Guest (not verified) on February 2, 2009 - 9:19pm.
You are an idiot! The damned fool shoved a 71 year old man who was just trying to do his job. He deserves everything he gets. Just because he is a cop does not make him better than anybody. What if this man had shoved your dad or grandfather down to the ground just because he was doing what he had to do for his job? Would you still want them to go easy on Mr. Freeman?

excessive punishment?
Submitted by Guest (not verified) on January 30, 2009 - 6:37pm.
Did you see the video? Mind you this is not his first time. He apparently got into at the court house not that long ago. Take this guys gun and badge before he hurts someone. My god he did not shove the 71 year old man, he assaulted him. The poor guy flew across the entry.
