College Presidents Say Lower the Drinking Age to 18
College presidents from about 100 of the nation's best-known universities are calling on lawmakers to consider lowering the drinking age from 21 to 18. They say current laws actually encourage dangerous binge drinking on campus. The movement called the Amethyst Initiative began quietly recruiting presidents more than a year ago to provoke national debate about the drinking age. The list now includes Presidents from Duke, Morehouse and Vice Chancellor Joel L. Cunningham from the University of the South in Sewanee. Mothers Against Drunk Driving says lowering the drinking age would lead to more fatal car crashes. MADD officials are even urging parents to think carefully about the safety of colleges whose presidents have signed on. Both sides agree alcohol abuse by college students is a huge problem.
Under age drinking
How can anyone say allowing more students to drink will lower the drinking? If everyone could remember, several years ago the legal drinking age was lowered to 18. What a mess it got into. I was one of the ones at age 19 then could buy beer legal. I was all ready drinking beer but after my age got voted in I drank more. Allowing 18 year olds to drink will just get more 14 and 16 year olds drinking.
Lets dont make the same mistake again.

Drinking age
I say raise the drinking age to 30. If you are younger than that you have not earned the right to drink yet!

Drinking Age
I think that it's fine where it's at. I realize the consequences in drinking and driving which is why I don't do it. However, I had a man hit me and total my car when I was 16, and that was his 9th DUI at the time. Mind you the man was in his late 40's. Thank God I had angels on my bumpers. So people learn on their own and at their own time, therefore it doesn't really matter what the drinking age is. It's really the driving age that matters, just look at other countries and their drinking age. Younger people are going to get their hands on alcohol no matter how old they are. It's not that hard to get. So if anything were to change, then it needs to be how alcohol is purchased. Fake id's are easy to get a hold of and easy to use. So why not start there?
