Boydston

On the evening of July 25th, school board member Janice Boydston was stopped as she tried to leave the Lookout Valley Wal-Mart. An employee said she saw Boydston conceal several items in her purse and then try to leave without paying for them, and that it was all on surveillance camera.

Sgt. Jerri Weary of the Chattanooga Police Department explains:  "An officer responded and spoke to loss prevention and then issued a citation for Theft Under $500."

According to the police report, six items from the health and beauty department were found in her purse. The total price at $34.05. We spoke to Boydston earlier today. She said she did pay for $85.00 worth of groceries. She said she has nothing to hide but under the advice of her attorney she would not do an interview.  "Theft under $500 is a misdemeanor charge," adds Weary.

Boydston says her purse was open and in the cart. That's how she said the items inadvertently got into her purse while she was shopping.

Diane Dixson was shopping at the Lookout Valley Wal-Mart Monday afternoon.  "Usually my purse is open like that," says Dixson.  "I put it in the top and then hook it and it would be possible that I could put something into it without knowing like that."  Dixson adds she's always sure to check it when she gets to the register.

Shopper Spencer Crane has a strong opinion about what happened.  "I think a thief is a thief. If you're going to steal something it don't matter who you are it's wrong."

This could jeopardize Boydston's position on the Hamilton County School Board. Just a week and a day before this incident happened the board adopted a new code of ethics. If found guilty, she could face censure by the board or be referred to the district attorney for ouster.

Shopper Kim Haddock also had a strong reaction to Boydston's story and worries about the impact on school children.  "What are they supposed to think? They're supposed to be role models for our children."

Theft under $500 is a misdemeanor charge and carries a maximum sentence of 11 months and 29 days and a fine.

Boydston faces a September 11th hearing on the charge in General Sessions Court.

Throw away the Key

Lock her up and throw the key away. I don't want this kind of infectious disease around my children.

Janice Boydstons theft charge...

I have known Janice Boydston for many years. She is and has never been a BAD role model as some of you have inadvertantly put it. How many of us have gone into a grocery store, department store and have become distracted by our children, or someone we have not seen in a while, or were in a hurry and done this same thing. I trust Mrs. Boydston. She has fought for me and my child and the children of our community and within this district for a LONG time. TV has made this public. Thus making her out to be a non-trustworthy board member. How many other theft's or others have been wrongly accused of something like this. We don't here about it unless people are in the public eye. I believe Janice was sidetracked and even if she was not caught she is a person who is honest enough to have walked back into a store and told someone what had happened and paid for them. Public personalities have a life to. The bible tells us "ye who is without sin, cast the first stone." Well... God knows Janice's heart and it is not what you all are claiming it is. I wish Janice Best of Luck. If you all know her as I do, you all would support her. Here is something to think about. With the way Gas prices have been what if one of you were to drive up to the pump. Pump your gas, get into your car crank the car to allow for it to warm up with it being so cold, then you get your money out of your billfold to go pay, but suddenly a cop asked you to step out of the car because the attendant inside the gas station thought you were going to drive away and not pay. Would this not apply somewhat to the same way Janice was treated. Think about it.

ANOTHER ONE TO WATCH & COMPARE TO B. LONG....

ANOTHER ONE TO WATCH & COMPARE TO B. LONG.... I MEAN, SHE TOO WAS HOLDING A PUBLIC "TRUST" OFFICE....

board member

The Board Member does not reflect any prior incidents and no intent, then she should be careful in her her shopping procedure. Her age and emotional status could be considered.

We should definitely be

We should definitely be concerned about the message this may send to the children in Hamilton County's school system. Not only should we be concerned about this most recent possible violation, but isn't a lady by the name of Debbie Smith serving as the Principal for a local high school here?

Could someone with the media please check and see if this Debbie Smith is the same Debbie Smith who was convicted of shoplifting a few years ago in our area and subsequently released from her position as Principal or Vice Principal of Westview Elementary? If she is indeed the same person, then we have another example of a "bad role model" for the school children as we certainly don't want children in our community to think that individuals can get away with shoplifting and/or other crimes and then go on to positions of power and "respect" in the school system.
