Former Signal Mountain Math Teacher Goes from Honeymoon to Courtroom

Jonathan Wesley Greene and Jacqueline Newman spent their second Monday morning as a married couple in a Chattanooga courtroom. The two face charges of criminal conspiracy, theft, and obtaining and possession of controlled substances by fraud.

Greene worked as a math teacher at Signal Mountain Middle-High School. He failed to notify the Board of Education after his June 17th indictment by the grand jury.  Danielle Clark, spokesperson for the Hamilton County Board of Education explains:  "The policy is they have five days to notify the district if they've been arrested or convicted."

But no one found out until last week- So some people want to know how he slipped through the cracks. School board member Chip Baker would like to see a change from this honor code system.  "I think there ought to be a system in place that if something like this happens, especially in an institution like a school system, the school system ought to automatically be notified," said the Board member covering Signal Mountain.

No one was at the Greene's Hixson home Monday afternoon, but News12 spoke to a neighbor who says although she doesn't know them, she says there hasn't been any kind of suspicious activity or even increased traffic around the house.

Baker remains wary: "I don't want him in our school system teaching out children."

"We've stared an internal investigation to see what the charges are, about the indictment, things of that nature. Once that investigation concludes we'll report the findings to the superintendent and he'll make a decision regarding discipline," Clark said Monday.

But then late Monday afternoon Greene resigned from his position at the school. Clark says they accept it-- effective immediately.

The indictment says Newman was filling fraudulent prescriptions for hydrocodone and Xanax while working as a pharmacy tech. Greene was then selling the pills on the street.
