Gas Shortage Changing Habits of Tennessee and Georgia Drivers

Changing Fueling Habits

Blank signs and black plastic bags on pumps are symptoms of the gas shortage are all over Chattanooga.

Walter Walton tried to gas up Monday morning.  "It's terrible, but it's just a fact of life," he said about the empty station in St. Elmo.

Gas stations all over the southeast are running on empty. According to operator Colonial Pipeline, there's just no supply for the southeast right now. So gas stations have to wait, but for how long?

Robbie Watkins works at the BP on Tennessee Avenue.  "That's the scary part, we don't really know," she said of when the next delivery would be in.

Martha Lovelady tried to fill up on her way to Maryland.  "So It tried to fill it and it did start for a moment gave me 15 cents and then it clicked off and when I tried it again it didn't work."  Even though she had half a tank she didn't want to run the risk of running out where the tanks are empty.

Some say this need to fill up before getting close to the "E" contributes to the shortage.

"Yeah, that's what's adding to the crunch. We need to stop panicking. Whenever you need gas, get gas," Walton explained.

Steve Christian agrees. "I think that people who get a little panicky will top off. Yes, I certainly do."

The manager of this Exxon on Fourth Avenue says people call ahead of time to see if there is gas.

When stations do have gas- expect long lines. "We sold over $16,000 worth of gas in one day," added Watkins.

Don't expect all the grades at most stations either. If your car runs on premium you still may be out of luck.

Great journalism, We are all

Great journalism, We are all very aware there is a gas shortage in S.E. Most of us know there is "damage" to supply line. What I still dont know after all this time and would love to read about, what kind of damage?, How long to fix?, where is the fed reserves? No alternative delivery system? Why is a supply to such a wide region so vulnerable? I'm sure you did the best you could. Great Job

I have a trip planned for

I have a trip planned for the Smokies leaving on Oct. 5 traveling from South Louisiana. Please let me know if I will be able to buy gas in and aroud Gatlinburg or postpone my trip.

Trip to Gatlinburg

The frustrating thing about all this is there is no definitive answer on how bad the shortage is at any given time.

But here's our best shot right now.

--- The situation is supposed to greatly improve across the southeast by this weekend.

--- The Knoxville/Gatlinburg area now has much lower prices than the rest of the state now, but that doesn't guarantee you can find gas.

---  You could make the trip today.  You just have to start looking for gas earlier than usual.  You may have to try a couple of exits.  Also, sometimes you have more luck in rural areas than in highly commercial city strips.  Finally (in our area at least) big oil stations like Exxon seem to get a better supply than independents.

--- You shouldn't have any trouble until you get east of Birmingham.  You'll find spot shortages across East Tennessee.  Avoid the Atlanta area at all costs.  Try this map from Gasbuddy (zoomed out all the way) for a general idea.  It's based on gas price, not availability, but it's a start.

Bottom Line: I wouldn't cancel my trip because it's doable right now and should be getting better every day.  It could be an inconvenience, but you won't get stranded.
