Hamilton County Schools And Chattanooga Housing Authority Sign On For New Downtown Adult High School

The Chattanooga Housing Authority has signed onto the proposed new downtown Adult High School.

The program is open to students ages 17 to 21 who have not been successful in the traditional high school setting.

Students learn in an intensive, college style setting, studying just a core curriculum, with no electives.

The existing Hamilton County Adult High School is in Harrison, and for many the distance is prohibitive.

Students say putting the new campus downtown will open the doors for others to earn their high school diploma.

Hamilton County High School Senior Christine Hagemeyer says, "I think that a lot more people would come so they wouldn't have to drive so far 'cause parents probably can't take their kids out here or won't allow them to drive this far."

The announcement of the location for the new adult high school is expected this Thursday.

DOESN'T SEEM TO DO MUCH GOOD....

I DON'T SEE HOW THIS PROGRAM CAN DO MUCH GOOD, OR ANY BETTER THAN A G.E.D. ANYBODY WHO "GRADUATES" THIS CLASS, WILL STILL HAVE TO TAKE THE ELECTIVES AND CREDIT CLASSES IN COLEGE IF THEY WANT TO PERSUE ANY KIND OF DEGREE. AND I CAN TELL YOU THAT JUST A G.E.D. OR H.S. DIPLOMA DOES NOT GET YOU FAR. I'VE HAD MY G.E.D. FOR YEARS, AND I AM WAY UNDER THE POVERTY LINE. ALL I AM GONNA SAY IS THAT EVEN THOUGH A G.E.D. OR H.S. DIPLOMA IS BETTER THAN NOTHING, ITS NOT THAT MUCH BETTER. DON'T GET YOUR HOPES UP PEOPLE.

GOT MY G.E.D. WHEN I WAS 17 BECAUSE I HATED SCHOOL AND EVERYTHING IN THE HAMILTON CO. SCHOOL SYSTEM BACK THEN TOO. MY SISTER GOT HER G.E.D. IN HER 20'S TO GET PROMOTED TO A BETTER JOB AT WORK. (OR HIGHER TITLE) IT DIDN'T MAKE THAT MUCH DIFFERENCE IN OUR PAY, BUT SHE DID GET THE TITLE...

Close proximity to attract more students?

Two questions beg to be asked...
1. Why would one assume a higher school attendance based on a close proximity for those who chose not to use buses that would've taken them to school in the first place?

2. If this new school is designed around "an intensive, college style setting, studying just a core curriculum, with no electives" for "students ages 17 to 21 who have not been successful in the traditional high school setting", then would a closer look at the past merits and achievements of the "traditional" setting be in order?
