Health News: Docs and Brocs
Imagine if your family doctor quit his or her practice. What would you do?
Well, you had better think about it, because it could become a reality, even if you have insurance. We'll explain, in today's Health Watch.
They take care of everything from boo boos to broken bones. Now, many primary care physicians or family doctors say they might be thinking of hanging up their stethoscopes. A new survey released by the Physicians' Foundation found of the 12,000 respondents, 49 percent said they'd consider leaving medicine over the next three years, if they had an alternative.
They blame everything from too much red tape generated from insurance companies and government agencies to not enough reimbursements for their time.
And we know broccoli is good for us. Now, a new study finds it and other cruciferous veggies like cauliflower and Brussels sprouts may lower lung cancer risks in smokers.
Researchers at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo found these types of vegetables have a protective nutrient that actually protects against cancers common to smokers.
Scientists found smokers who ate the vegetables cut their risk by 20 to 55 percent over smokers who did not munch on cruciferous vegetables. Doctors warn although this may protect smokers, quitting is the best way to avoid lung cancer.
