How To Get A Job At Volkswagen's Chattanooga Plant

Volkswagen plans to hire about 2,000 people to work at its new Chattanooga plant, but "when" remains a top question.

Volkswagen

The company confirms a job fair will be held this fall and the public will be notified through WDEF News 12 and other media sources.

At the Tennessee Career Center at Chattanooga, the sign at the front door says its all. "No applications for VW Plant." Questions keep pouring into the Career Center and other employment recruiters about how to get a job at Volkswagen. "They've asked that anyone wanting to work for the company, Volkswagen, to have patience," says Andrea Witt, Career Center Coordinator.

Volkswagen's own career center website features a few job postings relating to plant construction. The automaker continues to review staffing numbers necessary to run the plant and the skill sets needed to work there. Witt says "Volkswagen is committed to putting out a wide network to obtain top employees, they'll be working with the community and local media to get this information out to the public."

In Georgia, where Kia plans to open a plant late next year, the company began accepting applications in January and offering positions in April, nearly a year and a half before production begins. Volkswagen's timetable remains undetermined, but Mayor Ron Littlefield says "the company is on an aggressive schedule, they want to be pouring concrete this fall."

Since the application process wont begin for a while, Witt recommends getting your house in order now. That means take advantage of this downtime to boost your education level. "Those that do not have their GED's, probably want to work on those," says Witt.

Still, good paying manufacturing jobs remain available in Chattanooga right now. Mark Campbell, who owns Manpower, an employee recruiter, says "if your looking for a job, we have openings right now especially for assemblers and manufacturing capabilities."

Campbell says when Volkswagen starts hiring, the employment base will shift as people upgrade positions or transition from the service sector. In both cases, those existing jobs will also need filled.

EAP

Hello,

I am a Master's level counselor waiting for my credentials from the state of TN for Licensure. I currently hold a LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor) in the state of Georgia. I also hold a NCC (National Certified Counselor). I have been working with various people to aid them in maintaining and/or obtaining employment through masking positive changes in their lifestyles.

Please remember

This is a site for Channel 12 WDEF, it is not a sight to post resumes or ask for jobs at the upcoming VW plant.

Please contact VW directly for that.

Though it is interesting to see what some people have to offer the new plant.

Available VW jobs

Tim,

VW plans to hire 50 people this summer, but those are for procurement positions relating to getting the plant built and stocked.  You'll need to keep an eye out for future positions by looking at our VW Employment section or regularly sorting through the VW Career Center postings.  Best of luck.

Previous Car Manufacturing Experience a Plus?

I currently work for Hyundai Motor Manufacturing in Montgomery, AL. Does prior experience in this field boost your chances of landing a job at the VW plant?

Joe Legge's picture

Experience reply

Not Necessarily.  VW hasn't stated their employment needs yet for the production line.  However, Chattanooga State plans to train those working the line to Volkswagen's specifications.  So, while experience somewhere else would appear to be a plus, it would really come down to whether that experience fits with the VW way of doing business.

Experience Reply

What about BMW Manufacturing? 8 years experience from line worker to management.

Will Volkswagen need any

Will Volkswagen need any fluent German-to-English and English-to-German translators?

Response

English and grammar would probably be a good start.

if i was to go back to

if i was to go back to school to help me land a job at volkswagen, what field of study would i be looking to get into?

If you're looking to do

If you're looking to do assembly work, I'd look at Chatt State's auto-tech program. If you want a white collar job at the plant, you'd need an engineering degree, which you could get at UTC.
