A rally to support Lakeview Fort Oglethorpe cheerleaders and their religious banners draws a passionate crowd.

The Catoosa school district determined a long-standing tradition violated federal law.

Supporters say it's their rights that are being violated.

Jeremy Jones, Organizer, "That is stopping our freedom of religion."

Hundreds of people filled the polo fields in Fort Oglethorpe to support LFO Cheerleaders and their inspirational signs.

JV Cheerleader, "They can't stop the tradition that we have at LFO."

The girls spend the summer preparing signs like this one with bible verses on them.

Football players burst through them at the start of the game.

Denia Reese, Catoosa School Superintendent, "The problem is the location."

After a verbal complaint, Catoosa School superintended Denia Reese determined having the biblical banners on the field violated the first amendment of the constitution.

Reese, "It broke my heart to have to tell those girls that they could not display that message on the football field. The location inside the football field creates the impression that the school system is endorsing that particular religious message."

She says the banners can be displayed in a designated spot outside the stadium.

Kristy Stone, Former Student, "I don't see how that's a problem they're saying they can put it outside of the field but it's still on school property so what difference does that make?"

People at this rally don't see the distinction and worry about where it will stop.

Brad Scott, Organizer, "I think the response we're getting is people are tired of this, tired of the government taking away our rights telling us what we can and cannot do when it comes to our freedom of speech."

They've signed a petition to bring to the school board Tuesday.

And plan to pack the stands with messages from the bible during Friday's game.

Brandy Legasse, Student, "Instead of seeing if for just a couple of seconds, now they're going to see it for a very long time so they should've just left it alone."

Jessie Merciers, Student, "Now it's going to be there for two hours in the game because if I have to hold it up myself it's going to be held up there.

What was this country

What was this country founded off of, if it werent chrisitanity?

To God Be the Glory

Would someone please enlighten me on what glory to God can come from football... I'm not God or an angel or anything close so I can't speak for Him, but I have a sneaky suspicion that God doesn't give a rats behind about football :0)

How about instead of

How about instead of fighting over stupid banners, you go out and show what it truly means to be a Christian. Christians can spread God's word much more efficently if they go out and do works of Christ- like helping with the flood cleanup, helping out homeless people, etc. All this time and money that has been spent on debating whether or not banners with scripture on them should be on a football field could have actually gone to some good. Stop claiming you are a Christian and go out and show it. Take this as a loss, and try to show people your religion other ways.

Hooray for the LFO cheerleaders!!

For those of you who have already posted comments saying questioning that if a muslim person or a person of any other religion besides Christianity showed their religion that they would get into so much trouble YOU ARE WRONG. If you can't already tell by my first sentence I AM a Christian and I am PROUD of it. What I am saying is that you people are misled. If any other religion had done something like that I can assure you that nothing would have happened or at least nothing worse than what is going on right now. Religion is Religion and like the Constitution says we should not discriminate based on religion and that is what is going on with the LFO cheerleaders. People are getting mad at them because they posted up scriptures on signs and isn't that discriminatoin based on religion? For the few of those people out there that if having a verse on a sign that the team runs through offends you,I am sorry. There are probably many more people out there that love the scripture and DON'T want you to try to change anything that the cheerleaders have done. I am very proud of the LFO cheerleaders and students who are forming up rallies to support scripture.HOORAY! to you all and God Bless.

Please show me a case where

Please show me a case where a public school endorsed another faith besides Christianity and got away with it. I assure you, you won't find it. It's illegal. The cheerleaders aren't being discriminated against unless you have evidence that another faith was allowed to use a school event at LFO to endorse their faith. Sorry, but all faiths are equally NOT allowed to do that. Nobody's rights are being violated because you don't HAVE a right to endorse a religion at a public school event! Public venues should be kept neutral for everyone's sake.

By the way, I found this quote that I thought was pretty apt: “When a Religion is good, I conceive it will support itself; and when it does not support itself, and God does not take care to support it so that its Professors are obliged to call for help of the Civil Power, it is a sign, I apprehend, of its being a bad one.” Benjamin Franklin

Banners at school

It sure seems funny to me all you southerners spouting about the constitution, freedom and what not. About how this is America. Hey, didnt YALL seceed from the UNITED STATES of AMERICA? Want bible verses? Go to church. As Salaam Alaiekum. No wonder the Koran calls you infidels.

Guess what, guys? It

Guess what, guys? It doesn't matter if every single student and parent in the school supported this, you can't endorse any one religion at a public school event! And another newsflash - they're not violating YOUR rights. You don't HAVE a right to use a public school venue to display Bible verses. The law doesn't back you up, past precedent doesn't back you up, and the Supreme Court doesn't back you up. You know why? 'Cause you're flat-out wrong on this one.

the law

I think things would be alot better if the law and government would get out the the schools and the educational system.A separation of Education and Government.

It just goes to show that

It just goes to show that anywhere people are enjoying themselves, some liberal nutjob will stand up and claim to be offended by it... Im so sick of you liberal pinkos. If you dont understand why there was ever prayer in schools or why religion is important, then thats something you will someday answer for. Put simply, If you are offended by this or any other display of religion... DONT GO! STAY AWAY! Enjoy your sad, empty life quietly by yourself.

Religious display

Should students of other faiths have an equal opportunity to present similar messages?

To those of you saying that

To those of you saying that if this was any other religion the signs would not have been questioned, let me ask you this: If Muslim students got together and put up banners from the Qu'ran or Jewish students put up banners from the Torah, you wouldn't have a problem with it? Please. There are people complaining because immigrants from the Middle East built a place to play cricket. By allowing one religion to display their beliefs, you then must allow all religions. A public school football game should not be turned into the war of the religions- it should be an outlet for fun and competition. When the Founding Fathers came to America, they were trying to escape religious persecution. That is why they decided to put into place the separation of church and state. By only displaying one religion's message, you are essentially doing what they were trying to escape. If the students want to join a religious based club, then by all means go for it- off of publicly funded and sponsored school events. They can still wear their shirts. But if they want to put it on a football field then they need to go to a religious based school- not a public one.

Abuse of the Scriptures

Has anyone stoped to think for a moment the desicration of the Holy Scripture here! Ripping through a verse from the Bible? What does that really say about the reverence and respect for the Holy Scriptures? Sounds like another ploy for the religious right to be vindicated in an "press op". Just leave God out of it and go on with your lives!

LFO and MY KIND OF COUNTRY

Looks like I'm not alone with this one. I've had multiple people tell me I need to contact FOX and tell them about The Cheer Leader at this school Lauren Alaina Suddeth. You see she just released a Patriotic song titled MY KIND OF COUNTRY and it pretty mush tells America how she's proud to be from the USA...The song is worthy of giving it a listen and the video is even better. So heres a link to Laurens song...If you like it pass it on. You might have to copy and paste it.

Separation of Church & State?

Sorry Guest, but you are absolutely wrong. Had it been any other religion, no one would have questioned it. In fact, it probably would have been endorsed. But because it is Christianity, it has become an issue.

Yes, it DOES remove freedom of religion. The original idea of the constitution was to prevent government from dictating religion - allowing students to print a sign and hold it up at a public, school-organized event is in no way an example of government dictating religion. No one is forced to look at that sign, any more than I am forced to look at pornography.

Once upon a time this country was majority rule. Sadly, the majority must now walk on eggshells to avoid offending the fragile sensibilities of the minority - who are in no way hurt by a simple banner.

Separation Of Church & State

Why can't these people grasp the concept of "separation of church & state"?
Their rights are not being infringed upon. It does not take away their freedom of religion! If anything they are infringing on others rights to not have other people's religion shoved in their faces on the property of a FEDERAL establishment.
Had this been any other religion other than Christianity, these people would have rallied together to make sure that those signs were banned in a New York minute!

Out of all these people, the

Out of all these people, the school received ONE complaint. I'm sorry, that's not good enough.

Also, separation of Church and State is terribly misconstrued. You have to understand the CONTEXT of why it was written.

The FF prayed before drafting the Constitution. Benjamin Franklin told the group that they wouldn't be able to agree on anything unless they prayed to God and asked for His guidance. They had been struggling to come up with the blueprint for this new country. Doesn't sound like they wanted to banish "religion" to me.

This country was established by people who acknowledged the existence of God. They did not want a state sanctioned church. They wanted people to be able to attend the church of their choice. That is a lot different than what is being screamed out today about "separation of church and state ". This term does not even exist in the constitution.

"Seperation of Church and State"

One cannot help but wonder if the so called Seperation of Church and State is such a good thing? Looking at the state of our youth today, and the fact that we now have to put Police Officers in schools as Resource Officers, maybe we are going the wrong way by seperating "Church and State!" It seems to me that the moral compass is broken. Our youth today have more pressures and more potential to ruin their futures because of "Seperation of Chruch and State." If you take out the morality, then you leave a vaccuum that will be filled by something else that may be less desirable. Why do people find Christianity so offensive? Why does it offend someone to teach MORALS and RESPECT? Why are some people offended when Christian Principles are employed to teach kids to LOVE one another, rather than hate each other? It's a sad state of affairs when doing something GOOD is condemned by people so full of hate. And if you want to use that tired argument that Christianity is for the weak, or a crutch, then I challenge you to live a Christian life for one week, and see how "weak" we really are. It takes GUTS to do the right thing when everyone around you is doing the wrong thing. It takes MORAL COURAGE to stand up to the crowd, knowing that what they are doing is wrong. All the foul language. Try not swearing for one day, and see how hard it is to do the RIGHT THING.
I salute the Cheerleaders, and I say keep at it! If you acknowledge Him before men, He will acknowledge you before the Father!
