Is It Gouging? Gas Hits $4.99 In Tennessee Valley, Many Stations Remain Resonable
Comments Below: 25
After facing long lines to buy gas Thursday, area motorists today deal with a variety of dilemmas, from closed pumps and 10 gallon limits, to prices as high as $4.99 a gallon in Murphy, North Carolina.
But, drivers who pulled in at the Kangaroo at I-24 at Cummings Highway found plenty of gas at $3.65 a gallon.

GAS IN THE AREA
I am becoming very annoid with people lately. Everyone is concerned about the amount of gas avaiable and the prices we pay. Well if u dont need gas or feel like you need to top off your take stop it. Also jamming up the roads is annoying so you can save what a dollar by the time you get done filling up your tank. We need to realize everyone who tops their tank off is depleting the resources we and making it unable for people who are low on fuel to get gas. I dont understand why people are panicing. And if you want prices to come down stop topping your tank off. Its that simple. Plus waiting in line for gas is stupid too because you dont save that much money cause it takes you a half hour to get to the pump and its that much more gas you have wasted to save a dollar. sorry for the rant but lately trying to get gas at wal mart or trying to get into wal mart is ridiculous.
Gas
There is a gas shortage we are told. We are told supply & demand is driving the prices. If the employeers who could would switch folks hours to 4 10hr days we would reduce demand and increase availability. Employeers with employees who can work remote could also improve the situation.
does anyone know if diesel
does anyone know if diesel is hard to find & the price?

Gas Shortage in Dayton , TN
The only gas stations in South Dayton, TN., that have any gas, is Murphy, Fuller's and Jiffy.Murphy's price this morning--$4.19 for regular, Fuller's --$4.39 regular, dont know how much Jiffy's is at.
$4.89
Yeah that is right $4.89 for regular fuel!!! The funny thing is that Thursday night when this all started we paid 3.59 for gas. So of course many of us waited in lines to fill up. The very next morning, they were "out" of regular unleaded so my husband, (he didn't jump on the bandwagon), paid 3.89 for the premium. That was all they had.. By the time I got off work, they were out of the premium and medium grade and were back to only having regular unleaded.. BUT it was priced $4.89!! Can we say everyone will be living on WELFARE if this keeps up.. That is if they change the cost of living guidelines..
Yes, it is price gouging, however.............
Yes, it is price gouging, however, we, the public, are partly responsible. On Thursday (9-11-08) afternoon, we needed something from the store, and when we got to the store, there were people lined up in droves. What is going on???? Rumors??? If everyone had not went into a panic, and lined up for miles to purchase gas, we probably would not be seeing the prices as high as they are now. I don't even know how all of this got started, but it is totally crazy. We, the public, are the ones who caused the price to skyrocket, and the limits to be put on how much we can purchase. If we would just calm down and not panic, maybe none of this would have happened. How can the price of oil/barrel be at the lowest in 6 months, yet the price at the pump is more than it has ever been in this area. Well, part of the reason is the people panic....and then the retailers are able to take advantage of us all. Hopefully we will stop acting like we have a gas shortage, and realize everything is ok. Just stay calm. It will all be back to normal, as soon as the public stops trying to hoard all of the gas. Then it cannot be sold for $5.00 or more per gallon. Hope we all can just calm down and stop this insanity....
gas prices
I am going to be traveling through Chattanooga and would like to know if there are plenty of stations that have gas? i had read that some places were out of gas. I do not want to travel and need gas and not be able to get it.
Thanks
Gas
I am going to be traveling to Kodak, TN early monday morning and I would like to know if there are plenty of places to get gas in the chattannoga area. I do not want to leave and run low on gas and not be able to get any. any information would be appreciated
I am from columbus, ga and we have many stations that are out of gas here and also in phenix city, al which is right across the river. we tend to have higher gas prices than atlanta, ga. they tell us it is because we are not on the pipe line and it costs more to get gas to us. i think that is a bunch of crap myself. i do understand with all of these storms that have hit it affects the production but with the price of oil going down it makes no sense that we have to pay these prices. I agree that our government is in the bed with these big oil companies. it makes not sense that a company should profit billions and we suffer. i think that is one place we are ripped off the most. these needs to be in the forefront of the election.
Gas Prices
I saw a BP station today(9-12-08)change its prices. Regular went from $3.69 to $4.19! I am sorry but that is major gauging!!!!!!!
gas prices
its a shame that our goverment is in bed with the big oil companies. they let them dictate the price of gas without saying a thing.the priceon everything keeps going up but the hourly wage stay the same.ho do they expect folks to survive.its about time we americans stand up and tell the goverment to stand for its people and not the mney hogs.

Ignorance is bliss
Wow. Okay I have quite a few issues with your comments:
1. Typing with dashes between each word makes your statements very hard to read...not that anyone would be missing much by reading your garbled racist message.
2. The gas shortage had nothing to do with Bush, Arabs, or Mexicans. It had to do with the South getting their oil primarily from the Houston, TX area...which was just hit with a major hurricane. I'm sorry to burst your bubble. I'm all for blaming Bush when warranted, but this situation is not one of those times.
3. Instead of spreading hate, get an education. Your lack of proper spelling, grammar and sentence structure tells me you could probably use one.
4. We are a country of immigrants thanks to Columbus. The only "true Americans" are the full blooded American Indians. If you have an issue with immigration and those who aren't "true Americans", then why don't YOU go back to your motherland and let them have their land back.
5. Raising the cost of living and minimum wage does nothing but inflate the cost of everything else. Instead of complaining about it, do your part and help prevent prices going up by driving less. We can throw a band-aid on it and say it is all fixed, but eventually that band-aid is going to come off. We don't need band-aids, we need real solutions, preferably ones that don't come in the form of non-renewable natural resources.
I would say it is price
I would say it is price gouging, as last night while waiting in a long line, the gas station I was at was raising it's price as we all sat there and had been there.
Petroleum Market
There's definately price gouging going on at certain local fuel stations. U.S. demand has fallen for at least 19 months and even a serious hurricane in Texas hasn't caused as big of a rise in the oil futures and gasoiline futures markets as one might expect. Americans are tired of OPEC and speculators driving up the prices so much, they've sent a message by driving less, carpooling, taking more public transportation and driving more energy efficient vehicles. As a result, the market cannot sustain high prices and the prices fall. The trend worldwide is less consumption overall, even though the population continues to grow. Even with tensions in Latin America and the Middle East, I see America possibly cutting off importation from rogue oil producers by 2016, simply because we won't need their stinkin' oil. The time of record profits for petroleum companies maybe over. It may take 30 years of inflation to drive oil prices back above $147/bbl.
As far as stations gouging, these owners generally get reported and legal action is usually involved. The gas stations gouging immediately get a horrid reputation and their business suffers for months. There's one in East Ridge that I won't ever stop at again because they raised prices to $4.999 during Hurricane Katrina.
Even though prices around here have increased about 30 cents since yesturday afternoon, I noticed going home that they slid about a nickel. I would imagine everybody bought last night and very few are buying today. I would also imagine that prices probably won't stay this high for more than a couple of weeks because once again, these price shocks spur people to find ways to cut back on consumption. The oil industry and the petroleum speculators have made themselves enough rope to hang themselves and they're doing it right now, just like the mortgage specultors did.
Don't fret too much. Supply disruptions and crazy futures market conditions aren't fun, but the trend for less demand will end up making those events less frequent and far less painful for most Americans in the long run.
You are right and the gas
You are right and the gas companies will face a fall just like the mortgage company, but the government will step in and bail them out, citing it is in the best interest of the "American" people. It must be nice to be on top of the money market like the gas companies. I wish there was a way to dent them, but their big brother will always be watching.
Gas
The gas stations are out to take advantage of the people...and are doing it! They know the gas didn't come from the Gulf...only a small portion of it does. I guess they think this information is hidden to the public and they will come out with a much larger profit. (As if they need more profit) We just need to wait it out for a few days and hopefully all will come to their senses.
Everyone needs to remember
Everyone needs to remember the places that jack their prices up ,and boycott them to put them out of business!
come on america wake up
i wish people would quit driving for one week send a big huge message to the oli companies and gas retailers stay home dont go anywhere you cant walk to. after a week of no profit at all we can take our country back from money grubbing ceo's drawing billion dollar salaries to keep bilking us of our hard earned money.. i will laugh wen we finally get the technology to not use oil products and tell the oil companinies and the arabs to go **** themselves.

It's just GREED and it's a shame!
I agree it is greed but the
I agree it is greed but the sad thing is that seems to be the cause of much of our troubles in this country today.
I need a little help. I am going to be coming through Chattanooga to go to Kodak, TN and I am concerned about places being out of gas. I sure do not want to wind up stranded. Is there alot of stations that are out of gas (off the main road) or what is the situation up there.
try gasbuddy.com you can get
try gasbuddy.com you can get up to date prices on there. They have the contact info listed. Write a few places down or print a sheet. Then give them a call about 20 minutes out. It will save you alot of hassles. Hope that helps.Have a safe trip!
AS FOR NOW....
AS FOR NOW HWY 58 BETWEEN CHATTANOOGA & CLEVELAND HAS PLENTY OF GAS, BUT IS GETTING EXPENSIVE QUICK....

We can't stop driving our
We can't stop driving our cars. We all depend on them, in fact our whole existence depend on them. We're aware of the fact that we're leaving far from our jobs and we do need a car to travel from a place to another.
