Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards told a labor group he would ask Americans to make a big sacrifice: their sport utility vehicles.
The former North Carolina senator told a forum by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, yesterday he thinks Americans are willing to sacrifice.
Edwards says Americans should be asked to drive more fuel efficient vehicles. He says he would ask them to give up SUVs.
Edwards got a standing ovation when he said weapons and equipment used by America's military needs to be made in the United States. He says tanks and ammunition for M16 rifles are being made in other countries.
He says jobs that provide equipment for America's defense need to be made in the United States.
giving up SUV

Mr. Edwards please stop telling people what to do like telling them to give up their SUV's. Don't you understand that a lot of those people want a lot of room because they have a big family and those cramped cars are so small and terrible to ride in. I hate them and I would rather pay for gas than feel squashed and crampy. You better stop telling people what to do because you are going to turn us off on you. You were doing just fine until now. You better apoligize to the people for telling them to give up something they love. Don't you under stand that those SUV'S are excellent in the snow and I would never give up my SUV because of that. We live in snowy country and no car would get us through the snow like our SUV'S I have so many friends and family that gave up their cars for the old reliable lots of room suv and they feel good about it. Instead of telling us to give up SUV'S tell the manufacturer to make them economical on fuel. Leave the little guy alone. The big money makers ride around in the biggest trucks and bus like vehicles and they will nver give up theirs. Thanks for listening Dorothy McGuire

John Edwards is a empty suit. Like his counterparts in Hollywood they want us to sacrifice mean while they fly on private jets and live in huge homes. John Ewards like other liberals should pratice what they preach(Al Gore).

John Edwards truly doesn't get it. He can have my Lincoln Navigator when I get a $400 haircut. Last time I checked, this was America, and if I want to drive an SUV that gets 1 mile to the gallon, I can do so as long as I have the means to pay for it. I am not saying that his idea isn't an environmentally responsible one, but the very notion of a politican (and remember--they all drive in huge motorcades of GMC Yukons and Chevrolet Suburbans, etc...) "suggesting" that I "sacrifice" my SUV just flies all over me. I have one child and one on the way, and the huge backseat of my SUV is just what the doctor ordered for those bulky carseats--not to mention all the groceries, toys, and golf clubs I haul on a daily basis. Democrats are utterly ridiculous. They would prefer we live in a socialist society in which no one has any individual rights. They really need to change the name of their party to "the Socialist party." It would be closer to the truth. End rant.

EDWARDS GIVE UP HIS SUV????

When Edwards gives up his SUV, his big mansion, etc., than more people will be likely to FOLLOW suit, not be the leaders. If you can't walk the walk, then Edwards needs not talk the talk.

You sacrifice. I'll be home in the mansion.

Listening to multi-millionaires who live in mansions and travel the world tell common working people that they need to sacrifice their SUVs is really getting old. My wife and I love our Prius, but wouldn't tell other people to give up their SUVs. It would be much easier to stomach Mr. Edwards call to sacrifice if he gave up the mansion and started using more fuel effecient transportation himself. So far it is the same old story that we hear from some celebrities also -- you need to conserve while we fly in private jets.

I'll give up my 250 Ford Diesel truck up (I am sure he would say it is just as bad as SUV!) when he gives up his mansion and lives in my little 1,000 SQ foot house! So is he walking to the grocery store? Is he staying home instead of flying to his vacation? I don't think so. I love rich, spoiled brats who want us to sacrifice while they live like royalty!

What tanks, used by the US Army, are being made in a foreign country? To note, the only actual tanks in use by the military are the M1 Abrams and it's derivatives, and possibly the M551 Sheridan (unless the 82nd Airborne has finally turned those into the machine gun targets they richly deserve to be).
As for M16 ammo... I think the Israelis have a factory that makes it, but the vast majority of the M16 ammo (.223) comes from a US Army owned arsenal in the US.
