Lawmakers React to Georgia DOT Romance

|

Officials all across Georgia today are reacting to the bombshell at the Department of Transportation on Thursday.

Board chairman Mike Evans announced he had a romantic relationship with Commissioner Gena Abraham.

And he was stepping down to avoid the ban on such relationships.

The news was a particularly hard pill to swallow for north Georgia representative Martin Scott.

He backed Evans in a showdown with House Speaker Glen Richardson.

And the speaker stripped him of power as a result.

State senator Jeff Mullis was more diplomatic about it.

Senator Mullis: "So the board member has resigned and that's very honorable and I support him. He's done a great job turning this ship around in transportation in Georgia. The commissioner is doing a great job in assisting that effort and I hope she stays."

Mullis has worked with both of them in his role on the state transportation committee.

Gena Abraham and Mike Evans

Mr. Mullis' reaction is ridiculout. But, considering he serves in the Georgia Legislature which is notorious for hanky-panky it maybe he truly thinks breaking the policy of the department you head (see Ms. Abraham's memo to staff on March 31, 2008) that it is perfectly acceptable. It is not! She is in a position of power and trust and broke the rules of her own department. She has not credibility left! This is not about Romeo and Juliet, it about as a leader practicing what you preach. She did not and should not therefore, be allowed to stay. Period!
