MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - A security guard was in court Monday morning on charges of attempted murder after he shot a man in the head while on the job early Saturday morning.

Rodney Benton, 48, is charged with Attempted Second Degree Murder, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon and Employment of a Firearm.

According to the police affidavit, Benton was working as an un-armed guard at a business on the 5100-block of S. Third on Saturday, January 26 when he got into a fight with a man around 1 a.m. The fight escalated, and Benton pulled out a gun and shot at the man, hitting him in the head. Benton told police the man had first pointed a gun at him when he pulled his own weapon.

The 30-year-old victim was transported to The MED in critical condition.

Investigators state Benton does not have a license to carry a firearm.

Rodney Benton remains at the Shelby County Jail on a $200,000 bond. He is due back in court with an attorney on February 4.
