Sheriff Long was a veteran officer, who surprised many with his win over longtime Sheriff John Cupp in 2006. Long brought with him a host of law enforcement colleagues, friends and supporters when he took office.
The news of Sheriff Billy Long's arrest came as a shock to the people we talked to today. And as you might expect citizens and county officials are not quite sure what to think of Hamilton County's top cop facing up to 50 years in jail.
Hamilton County Mayor Claude Ramsey admits, "its a sad day for Hamilton County. it's a sad day to be a public official in Hamilton County." Ramsey reacts to the news about Sheriff Billy Long's arrest. Chief Deputy Allan Branum's reaction is not much different, saying, "i'm very surprised. And if these allegations are true I'm very disappointed." Branum has assumed the sheriff's duties in the interim. County residents like Nola Rucker, are shocked to find that instead of protecting citizens, someone in Billy Long's position may have been threatening them instead. Rucker says, "thats kind of scary. You would trust your sheriff to be an honest person and to do the right thing." And while Sheriff Long is in charge of the county law enforcement, his actions reflect on the city of Chattanooga as well. Jamie Greiner adds, "certainly as a citizen of Chattanooga its disappointing, You know you hate to have anything that would be detrimental to the face of the city." A visably shaken Mayor Ramsey says that the county has an obligation to provide good law enforcement to the people, and now county officials have to take the next step. "Its important that we pick up the pieces and move forward. Its important that we have good law enforcment." Chief Deputy Branum also says that this devastates many in the community and citizens agree. "Very shocking and quite disturbing actually."
County Mayor Ramsey, along with commission Chairman Bill Hullander met with sheriff's department employees later today, to ask for their cooperation in maintaining strong law enforcement in the county while the investigation is going on.

I agree with the Erlanger/City corruption issue.Problem is that the federal government has accepted a payoff settlement for non-involment of any wrong doing. The money making machine continues to line the pockets of elected officals, both city and county.Even president Bush showed up last year to endorse Erlanger, but only after Federal Government
received a forty million dollor payoff. This was a win,win situation for all parties except residents like you and I who pay for it all by jacked up medical costs, shoddy care, and stiff fines and fees for simple and minor traffic violations which for the most part are accidential and innocent. The only way to protect yourself is to go to another hospital for decent care and install a cheap video camcorder in your car, activate it if pulled over by a Hamilton
County "Wyatt Earp".Be sure to stay witih range of your camera and record all conversation, your going to need all the help and support during Spanish Inquistion trial.Cell phone camera's also afford some protection. When driving the speed limit, a patrol car with Wyaat Earp behind the wheel, passes by you without the blue lights on,He is speeding or breaking the law.Siren can be on or off.Put that cell phone camera to use and at the very least post on "youtube".Always bear in mind thou, corruption starts at the highest level and filters down, remember Bush showed up at Gestapo headquarters last year and there is plenty of room at the second hideout,"the Fairyland bunker".Personally I'm leaving this state soon,I have been wronged so many times I feel like a Jew during WWII.

This is a sad momment for Hamilton County. We put our trust in Sheriff Long and he has not only let us down but he let himself down. Some things I can over look but DRUGS, no way. Drugs are killing our young people everyday. It tears families apart and destroys the future of America. I have no pity for drug dealers. The real shame is we will now support him for the rest of his life. Maybe he will be man enough to use that gun he carried for 31 years. I'm sure his family is real proud of him. Just who did he think he was? I hate to think what I would do to someone that sold drugs to one of my grandchildren, I guess they would support me too. Let the courts do their job.

In my opinion, every one of Billy Long's appointees should be looked at carefully. "When you lay down with dogs, you get up with fleas." There is probably more involvement in these crimes than just Billy Long.

Billy Long sold his name.
Submitted by Guest (not verified) on February 5, 2008 - 4:25pm.
He sold his name for dollars. How sad. That's all a man truly has is his name. And once it's sold you can't get it back. It's done. It would be a crying shame for any man to sell his name - but the sheriff? After he took oaths? His word is not worth spit now. The Long name is trashed. He will forever be known as being rotten. When he dies he will be remembered as the rotten sheriff that sold his name. Sad.

Billy Long and Public Corruption
Submitted by LAWDOG Retired (not verified) on February 5, 2008 - 1:42pm.
You know, it sounds a little hollow right now, but most of the Deputy's in the Sheriff's Department just go to work everyday and do their duty in a honest and prideful manner. The Sheriff's department in Hamilton County from the days of Bookie Turner to today has been a breeding area for kickbacks and corruption and that is unfortunate. But the Sheriff's department isn't the only one.... Erlanger Officials and some of its physicians, were investigated and found to have "stolen, given away, misappropriated" over $110 million dollars by the Feds. They paid back only $40M due to the impact it would have on its loans and no one was ever held accountable! The docs that took kickbacks, the former Administrators and even current Board Members that were involved have swept this one under the proverbial "media rug." Prosecute former Sheriff Long, but what about all those white collar criminals "further east on 3rd Street." At the very least go after some of the money the culprits took inapproriately.... Shame on the Chattanooga News Media for letting this one get away.

this is why I don't even vote anymore. No matter what kind of promises they make up front, when they get in office all the do is lie and use their position for personal gain. It is the same from the local level all the way to the president.

A Good Long Look
Submitted by Jerry Flagstone (not verified) on February 3, 2008 - 3:54pm.
I believe that it is in the best interest of this county to take a good hard look not only at any personnel that Mr. Long brought into this administration, but at any changes he had made in Hamilton County.
As someone who lives in Soddy Daisy, I would be more surprised if Chief Deputy Branum were even knowledgeable about Mr. Long's illegal activity, but we still need to look closely to protect ourselves from further devastation as a community.

Disgraceful Sheriff Long
Submitted by John Q (not verified) on February 3, 2008 - 3:20pm.
Given the information we now have, how many times has he sent someone to jail under false accusations? How many times has he let a drug dealer, selling to our young, go in return for a bribe? The penalty for this, a SHERIFF, should be double that given to an ordinary citizen. He took an oath to uphold the law and instead has abused it. He abused the power of the office, the money of the tax payers, and, more importantly, the trust of the citizens of Hamilton County. He has shamed all the honorable men and women of the department who put their lives on the line for our safety everyday. It makes one wonder how many in the department, if any, have abused their power of law enforcement as well. I believe this calls for shake up of the entire Sheriff's Department. How can we, the citizens, trust the department to put our safety first.

Who that is without sin
I know what Billy Long did was horrible, but to accuse others because of one mans sins is not right. There are good men and women in the department that many of you still call on when you need help, and you get good results. When you criticize others and blame them, that's called judging. The word of God says all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. While you're talking about known sins of Billy and dreaming up sins of others, what was Jesus writing in the sand about you?
