March, Vigil Held For Man Killed By East Police
Comments Below: 0
The family of a man shot and killed by East Ridge Police held a march and candlelight vigil in his honor Sunday. The group held signs and walked from the police department to Yale Street - the spot where Richard "Mark" Dunn Junior was killed. On August 8th, officers responded to reports a man had a gun at the Knights End on Ringgold Road. Dunn fled the scene in a stolen silver Mercedes. When officers tried to stop him they say he repeatedly rammed into their cars. They opened fire. Dunn was pronounced dead a short time later. Dunn's sister says her brother was just scared to go to jail for outstanding criminal warrants and didn't deserve to die. The City of East Ridge released this statement:
The City of East Ridge extends condolences to the family of Richard Dunn in their loss. However, Mr. Dunn chose to use a stolen vehicle as a deadly weapon against police officers in order to avoid capture for his crimes. We stand behind the actions of our officers in protecting both their own lives and the lives of innocent citizens. Even though the organizers of this event failed to obtain a permit, in violation of city ordinance, due to the small number of participants, we allowed the event to take place with certain restrictions.
