Details On Hamilton County Sheriff Billy Long's Arrest

hEY GUYS YOU VOTED HIM AS THE PROTECTOR OF YOUR FAMILY AND YOUR HARD EARNINGS.

This story has received some national attention, and I think we need to all be on our best. This type of thing really brings out the best and the worst in people. I believe that this man, whatever he has or hasn't done, needs our prayers. His family is suffering, and my heart goes out to them. There are no winners in this situation. There is no joy in mudville, the entire situation is sad. Let's hope for the best for all involved, and handle this in a way that reflects the type of community this is, one with class, education, humility, and forgiveness.

My husband is a Chattanooga police officer and there are still good guys that are in law enforcement. The problem is that they are promoted based on who they know and what skin color they have. I believe that the most qualified person should be promoted and put in a position of leadership. My husband has been passed over for promotion 5 times and he has a college degree, working on his masters and military leadership skills. He is seriously looking at making a career move because people like him are constantly getting passed over for promotion. People like Billy Long are being put in these positions because of their popularity. These departments need to be investigated and they need to be exposed. Any body can get a badge and a gun if you have a clear record. Just because you have a clear record does not mean that you should be a police officer. There are many officers that are waiting to make that first arrest because it is a high for them. It is not about cleaning up the streets. It is about how it makes them feel. This madness will continue on unless someone takes a stand and says enough is enough.

I HAVE MET BILLY LONG MANY TIMES. AND ONE THING THAT WAS ALWAYS CONSISTENT, WAS THAT HE ALWAYS TREATED ME WITH RESPECT. THIS CAME AS SHOCK TO ME TO FIND OUT THAT BEHIND HIS BRIGHT BLUE (ALMOST WHITE)EYES, WAS ANY FORM OF DECEPTION. AND THROUGH ALL THIS NEGATIVITY, I WILL SAY "GOD BE WITH YOU AND YOUR FAMILY BILLY". IF HE IS GUILTY, I HOPE HE HAS LEARNED HIS LESSON. IF NOT, GOD SPEED TO GET HIM OUT. BLESS HIS HEART.. POLITICIANS ARE PUT UNDER A MICROSCOPE. AND WHEN THEY GET CAUGHT DOING SOMETHING WRONG, THE CONSEQUENCES ARE MAGNIFIED 1000%. IF IT WAS US GETTING BUSTED FOR ALL THIS, IT WOULD BE FINES AND A FEW MONTHS IN JAIL. BILLY IS LOOKING AT ALOT MORE BECAUSE OF HIS TITLE. THEY WILL PROBABLY STRIP HIM OF EVERYTHING BEFORE ITS ALL SAID AND DONE. ONCE AGAIN, BLESS HIS HEART.

What a disgusting individual. Not only has he put his family and friends in a horrible position, but his Officers as well. Handing a gun and a badge to anyone outside of law enforcement is quite an act of disregard for the public at large. He has now opened the door for citizens to disregard the Badge,either out of fear or opportunity. "How do I know it's real?....." What kind of company was this man keeping that he was associated with a Cooperating Witness he believed had that kind of connections? As small as Chattanooga is, I find it hard to believe that no one noticed the Sheriff in town was busy down on the Boulevard. I'm from the "right side of the tracks" and even I know what you go down the Boulevard for. As a twenty-one year member of the East Brainerd community I drive down the stretch of road dedicated to an Officer killed in the line of duty every single day. I have always felt safe in my neighborhood, thanks to the Officers in my area. I don't want to look at them with one eyebrow raised, but how can I not? This is just sickening all the way around.

I worked in Billy's campaign the entire time he ran for office. I sat for hours and listened to him put down Cupp and all of his men because they were stealing money from the county. "Oh, we have to get Cupp out of office. All that money they are stealing from the county could be helping the people." What a freaking joke. He bashed Cupp for buying his wife a new car every year. I remember eating lunch with Billy one day while we were on the topic of Cupp spending so much money and he said, "you know, I'm not going to buy a new house or even a new car. I'm going to pay off what I owe and be happy with what I have". He said he was going to run for 1 term and retire again. Why would you come out of retirement, run for 1 term, and then retire again? Money getting low? Need a quick way to make some extra cash? Why not extort some Indian store owners in your spare time. I hope the shady oompa loompa stays in prison. Maybe he can learn propper grammar while he's in there. Hopefully the FBI will continue to investigate the department and the crooks will be removed and we can get someone better in office.

Someone needs to tell the Federal District Attorney and the FBI to check into the McMinn County Sheriffs Deptment, mainly the Sheriff Steve Frisbee. And also the Athens City Police Dept. where the city detectives seem to make up the laws as they go.

It's hard to believe that the top Law Enforcement Officer in this County has done this (yes done this). The FBI is not going to arrest you unless they have the evidence to put you away. This has given all of us a big black eye. I hope that those of us in Law Enforcement will keep their heads up. I have been in Law Enforcement for along time and my family as well. The Officers that I've been around take alot of pride in being a Law Enforcement Officer. The old saying needs to come to mind " one bad apple can make the whole bushle look bad". I feel for the Long family (wife), but I think that the Sheriff needs to resign right now from jail, if he has any feelings for the guys that risked their life's every day for him. I just hope that the citizens in the Hamilton County area understand that we in Law Enforcement took this job to be able to help in many different ways and not for personal gain. Most of us feel that being a Law Enforcement Officer is a calling. We know going into it that we are not going to make alot of money, but that isn't the reason for getting into this job anyway. We all will get through this so those of us in Law Enforcement keep your heads up and be proud!

Its hard for me to believe that no one else in the Sheriffs dept knew what was going own. I did vote for this man and even made a donation to his camp and went to a victory speech. I am saddened for his family and those in his office who are trying to do the right thing.we just keep getting a black eye here in the south for electing these people to office and I can assure you its still going on in this town. Well so much for YOU CANT GO WRONG WITH BILLY LONG. I did and am now ashamed for it.

I hope the FBI is looking into the acts Long's staff has been committing. I know for a fact that the Long's cronies, his first and second assistant, abuse their power on a regualr basis. One guy that Long hired had never been in law in forcement but he is/was 3rd or 4th in command. Chattanooga needs to clean up the scum.

It takes something like this for people to pay attention to the secret lives others may have, especially Billy Long. How that man could create and mantain his lies is rather scary considering the oath he took. I feel for the his family and the good policemen and women out there. This creates a general distrust within our community. Hopefully all that hold public service positions, sit on boards, commissions and agencies will take a "long" look at this event and pause when they look in the mirror. One day the "mask" you may or may not hide behiend will be exposed.

It makes me sick.
You could just listen to this redneck talk and know he was a crook.
He might as well had made a press release to our chidren saying that it's OK to do drugs and be a crook.
You might suspect that if the top of the department is this bad there may be others.

What is new about this picture, nothing. For years the Sheriff's elect has been proffitting from the peoples that elected them all over Tennessee. Have you ever know a shefiff to leave office broke.Very Few has. They get elected and start moving into new homes or large farms. Just look at any county around you. You might think the TBI would be involved but their hands are tied by the District Attornys Office or DA's Office. If the DA refuses to let the TBI get involved, what does that look like. Its not only the Sheriff's. I am glad the FBI started this but I hope they don't stop with just this one. And yes I am a proud Law Enforcement Officer. I live from pay check to pay check hoping nothing breakes. I to have desires but I can sleep at night knowing I have never taken anything from anyone. How many can say that????. As for longs family I fill sorry for the enbaresment this crook has put on them and the department. For Long don't drop the soap BUDDIE Or mayby he can squill like a Pig.

he was an embarrassment to chattanooga even before his arrest. he can't even speak correctly and was elected to a public office. shame on us for putting such a ignorant man in such an important position where character is deemed necessary.

I worked for the Hamilton County Sheriff's Department back in the 80's recently I tried to go back to work for the department and I was told I was not qualified to work there now because of a new law that says if you have an FBI number your disqualified. It's kind of ironic that I worked for TVA as a public Safety Officer at Sequoya and at Watt's Bar where I needed a security clearance, and I now have a security clearance with the United States Government with Immigration and Customs Enforcement as a Custody Officer, BUT I am not qualified to work in my own home town Sheriff's Department.
Now the Sheriff is charged with these crimes it is truly a sad day for Law Enforcement in Chattanooga.

Wow! With a crooked sheriff like Long and all of the folks that got wrapped up in the Tennessee Waltz scam, it makes me wonder if the spirit of Louisiana's Huey P. Long doesn't yet live on! What a difference a vote made here. We went from Cupp, a highly respected member of the community, to someone like Long? Maybe we better look closer at those we elect to offices of power before we vote again!!

What was done with all of the machines these Indian
store and restaurant owners had. id the FBI destroy them or remove them. With the problems that the immigration community brings to our country are any of these people illegal? Will they be deported if they are?

Another embarrassment for Hamilton County Government. What kind of lifestyle would require Long to need so much money? I agree with the first poster. If any other Joe Doe citizen did this, they'd be charged with hate crimes on top of everything else. But, just like any other "law enforcement officer" who gets greedy, they'll get off lightly with a mere slap on the wrist because for some ridiculously skewed reason, judges seem to favor cops regardless of their illegal activities or bizarre behavior.

I suppose this explains why he did nothing and didn't return my call after I spoke with him a few days after my brother was found dead. I begged him to investigate his death, and he promised he would call me back in a week or so. That was Sept of 2006, just days after he was sworn in. I voted for him and believed he really cared about Hamilton County. What a Fool I was. To this day my brothers' death is unsolved and closed, I suppose. What else can we do when the officals don't care? My family will never have the answers. Thank You SHERIFF LONG, I hope you rot in jail!

The sad part in most police arrests is that they get off easier than the average citizen when they should in fact suffer the tougher sentence because they are well aware of the law and better off educationally and financially than the common crook. If I shook down the ethnic storeowner, I'd probably get charged with a hate crime in addition.
