Point of Origin Found in St. Elmo United Methodist Church Fire

Another local fire continues to perplex investigators.

Federal agents have joined the team combing through the ashes of St. Elmo United Methodist Church.

The historic building caught fire late Sunday.

And while investigators say they still can't determine a cause...

They have a point of origin...

St. Elmo Resident Charles King, Sr. says, "It was the biggest fire I seen in a long time."

For King watching the St. Elmo United Methodist Church burn was heart breaking, "If it was some business place, probably been different. But being a church I have more sympathy for them."

Across the street crews sort through the rubble.

National Response Team supervisor Brian Hoback says, "We're taking this building apart piece by piece."

Nearly 50 ATF agents are aiding in the investigation.

Some help excavate the site tying to reach the point of origin.

Others join police and fire investigators following up on more than 50 leads.

AFT Assistant Special Agent Steven Gerido says, "We don't know how the fire got started. We know the origin and that's all we know."

The church was built in 1921 and has historic value...damage estimates have topped $1.5 Million, so calling in the ATF was standard procedure.

But some in the community ask if the church could have been targeted for its liberal congregation... Just months ago Charles Kings says KKK symbols were spray painted on the church's sign.

Agent Gerido says, "It doesn't matter what was spray painted on the church, outside the church or where it might have been. We're just going about our normal procedure of investigating a fire."

Agent Gerido says it's too early to know if the fire was a crime or just an accident...

But for Charles King it's still hard to see the church with its scars, "They were just real supportive of this community..."

Agents hope to complete their preliminary investigation by the end of the week.

If you have any information in the fire, please call Chattanooga Police.

St. Elmo UMC

I just read all the WDEF reports and, as a former journalist, the initial reporting seems sensational and irresponsible. The National Enquirer can attribute every quote and source that has Elvis still alive, but that does not make it responsible journalism.

The quotations in the story make it very clear that investigating all leads is standard procedure in a fire with so much damage. Nobody from the community is quoted as saying s/he believes it was a hate crime. "Some in the community ask" is not only a nebulous statement but also does not come near an actual assertion or theory. The statement about KKK symbols should have been checked out. Does the reporter really think such a thing would have happened recently and not been reported, and therefore, in WDEF's recent files? Was it responsible to quote someone who is not even a member of the church but who instead was sharing information gleaned through the community grapevine? Noooooo.

The fire took place Sunday, August 23. The story was posted August 26. In three days, there was more than enough time for a responsible journalist to:

--Verify the accuracy of the alleged KKK symbols.
--Quote a church official instead of just a community resident.
--Interview other church members and, in addition to asking if they thought there was any reason the fire might not be accidental, written about church members showing that a fire can destroy a building but not their church.
--Ask the investigators if an accidental cause had been ruled out and quoted the response.
--Attribute the idea of the church being targeted to a specific person.
--Attribute the use of the term "liberal" to a source instead of making that judgment on her own, even if for her it did not have a negative connotation.
--Have the courage to use the words "welcoming," "diverse" and "gay-friendly" instead of beating around the bush with the term "liberal." If you look at the Christian Gospels rather than man's theology, St Elmo UMC is conservative in its steadfastness to Christ's teachings.

I am not a member of that church and no longer live in Chattanooga, but it is too bad that WDEF has not offered a follow-up story on how the spirit of a church is not vanquished with a fire.

St. Elmo United Methodist Church

My Name is Scott Medley and I am Chairman of Trustees at St. Elmo United Methodist Church. The statement made in this article:

"But some in the community ask if the church could have been targeted for its liberal congregation... Just months ago Charles Kings says KKK symbols were spray painted on the church's sign."

is NOT factual information. KKK was not painted on our church sign. The letters KKK are in fact spray painted twice on the rear building brickwork. This was not painted just months ago. It is very faded and could have been there as long as 15 years ago. Also, St. Elmo United Methodist Church is not a "liberal" congregation. We are a "Christian" congregation who ministers to everyone. We ask that the media not sensationalize our loss of our church building. We are grieving and we would appreciate a retraction of this non-factual information. We appreciate the media, but please be sensitive during our time of tragic loss. Thank you.

Mr. Medley - thanks so much for taking the time to post your comments. In no way was the story intended to be insensitive. However, the comments in the story were made by members of the community and were attributed as such. The term "liberal" does not imply that St. Elmo UMC is not a "Christian" church, nor does it bear any negative connotation. As to the location of any markings on the church, thank you for the correction. Never-the-less it is a matter being discussed & therefore appropriate for mention.

Please know the story was not meant to sensationalize the loss of your church. I cannot imagine the loss of such an important part of my life. But it's my job to tell a complete story, please understand that's what I was trying to do.

Again, thank you for expressing your concerns, I hope my response helps to sooth them.

Respectfully,
Reneé LaSalle

St. Elmo United Methodist Church

Ms. LaSalle, Thank you so much for your very quick response to my concerns. I do entirely appreciate and respect your position to do your job. I also understand your reasoning in reporting as you did. I do not believe that you had any ill intent toward our church whatsoever. We have appointed our Pastor Rev. Mark Dowell, myself and the Holston Conference Chattanooga District office to disseminate the pertinent information of St. Elmo United Methodist Church to the media. Of course, the state and local officials can report information as they deem necessary. If you choose to report any information other than from those sources, it may or may not be factual and in the best interest of our church. The church will not tolerate a media frenzy of harmful information reported relating to our recent church loss. Our church is a spiritual Christian entity that reaches out to a "diverse" not "liberal" congregation. We just simply wish that you will continue respect our position to not be labeled as to one specific group that we minister to. We minister to anyone and everyone and this is something that we would like reported. If you have any questions or wish to talk with me further, please feel free to contact me anytime at (423) 718-2759.
Best Regards,
