Deputy Terry Miller, a 13-year Walker County Sheriff’s Office employee, was attempting to serve three arrest warrants for aggravated stalking (felony), harassing telephone calls (misdemeanor), and violation of a temporary protective order (misdemeanor) on 34-year-old John Curtis Coates, Rossville, GA.
While trying to effect the arrest in the parking lot of Chick-Fil-A restaurant, Battlefield Parkway, Fort Oglethorpe, GA, Deputy Miller and Ft. Oglethorpe Police Officer Mitchell Moore encountered resistance from Coates. During a struggle with officers, Coates retrieved a handgun from his vehicle’s glove box and fired the gun, striking Officer Moore in his back. Deputy Miller fired his service weapon in defense and hit the suspect, Coates. Coates was transported to Hutcheson Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
An autopsy is scheduled on the deceased at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab in Decatur, GA on Thursday.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting.
