South Pittsburg Homicide
Comments Below: 6
A homicide in South Pittsburg shocks a small neighborhood.
It happened on Oak Street Tuesday afternoon.
Police say two men got into an argument.
WDEF News 12's Mandy Odom has reaction from the community in tonight's top local story.
Neighbor Angela Kahler says, "I heard it this morning, but I didn't know what it was until after I say all the police cars, and then the puzzle just fit together."
South Pittsburg Police say the victim, a black male in his forties, was shot once in the back.
It happened at 111 Oak street around 1 o'clock central time.
Police say he died quickly, but they won't release the victim's name until the next of kin is notified.
The TBI charged 18-year-old Jeresse Edwards with criminal homicide.
South Pittsburg Police Chief Dale Higdon says, "Evidently, what we are learning right now, it was an argument."
Off-camera other neighbors say they think the argument was drug related, but police don't have a motive for this crime.
Officers arrested Edwards after he returned to the scene.
He told officers he threw the gun, but they didn't find it.
Chief Higdon says, "Possibly one of these kids picked it up. I don't think that's what happened, but that's a possibility. We are very concerned about that. The only good thing about it, is it was a single shot so it wouldn't have any bullets in it right now."
Police believe someone else picked up the gun and took it away, but neighbors still worry.
Kahler says, "Kids walk up and down the alley a lot. So, I mean it could turn up in the wrong hands at the wrong time."
Angela Kahler just hopes the neighborhood will clean up now.
Kahler: "(Reporter: Did you think anything like this would happen in your neighborhood?) Not this drastic. I didn't think it would go this far. There's been a lot of commotion. A lot of fights, but I never thought it would get to this point."

MCPD AND SPPD
Its kills me that everytime something happens in Marion county concerning the African Americans the police department always say its drug/gang related and they be qick to broadcast it on the news before really investigating the situation. What about the white woman who ran off and let her kids burn in the apt complex she only did 6 months in jail, the man from new hope that got away with the killing of another Afrian American man he made bail the next morning and all the police did was cover it up and then started replacing the old police with new ones. What about when the police ran two African American Males into a tree killing them both, they covered their tracks up because everybody knows the police depatment was responsible for it. What about mike killian the mayor of South Pittsburg, Tn doing as much as the man next door but that really doesnt matter because all Marion County Police Department wants to do is get rid of the the "Gangsters'"drug dealers" thats the catagory they label all African American Men. The thing that really gets to me is they dont want to help Our boys just slap the handcuffs on them and lock them up, but as long as they play sports and taking them to the state championship they're good when its all over with there're thrown away like trash. There's a lot of racial profiling going on in Marion County and someone needs to step in and investigate that!
Is the "Race Card" your only Play?
If the "Race Card" is all your holding, maybe you should consider folding your hand.
This is not a race issue, it's a family issue. It is not exclusive to black Americans, it's a real tragedy for all races.
The fact is we should make getting rid of the "gangsta's" and drug dealers a top priority. They are breaking the law.
1. Maybe consider instilling some values into precious children before they become thugs.
2. Stop having sex outside of marriage.
3. Teach the boys to be men / fathers.
4. These thugs are directly tied to the breakdown of the nuclear family.
Until the black American community stops blaming everyone except the breakdown of there own families, these crimes will continue.
It's a tragedy that a life was lost, my prayers for both families.
regarding the sports issue, I agree with you, athletics should be a tool to help young people learn about working together, respecting each other, respecting rules, and mentoring boys into men.
The "Race Card" is not the only Play
The "Race Card" is not the only Play, but most of the time its the only card we're left with. I agree that every time something happens in the African American community, the media and the police department thinks its about "gangs and drugs". This incident had nothing to do with either. Not all African Americans are into drugs and gangs and that is something that need to be cleared up. What about the White rich kids that get hooked on drugs and wear saggy pants? Are they labeled as drug dealers, addicts, gangsters or thugs? I resent the word thugs in identifing our young Black males, when white males do the same thing. When its an African American its usually about race no matter how you slice it. Take Michael Vick for instance he did 18 months in prison for abuse of dogs. Michael Phelps was shown on the cover of a magazine smoking a pipe and nothing happened. There are so many instances like this that happens every day, so what are African Americans supposed to think. The Police shot and killed a 14 year Black male in a Chattanooga Housing Project, camers are everywhere, but there was no footage of the teen raising the weapon at the officer. That was covered up. I'll bet the officer never told that he was on the porch playing "Poker with another gentleman. The Black male that was shot multiple times by officers, nothing was done about that. The young man was suicidal, they should have just let him shoot himself. I think that was "OVER-KILL. Not everything is the parents fault. When it seems that you have done all you can do and you cannot get help for resources that are supposed to be available to people trying to get help for a wayward child the system often fails. May GOD bless both of the families involved. Instead of critizing and trying to pass judgement, we as a community wheather Black or White, lets try to reach all of our children with the Word of God and ernestly pray for them.
Nobody is perfect.
Nobody is perfect.
Spoken like like a true
Spoken like like a true african-american. If the "brothas" would pull thier pants up and show some respect for themselves and their surroundings they wouldn't all be labeled "gangstas"

Help instead of jail time is
Help instead of jail time is what everyone needs. Not just African Americans, even though they are singled out. Especially around here. Spelling in this area is also a challenge....
