Spring Creek Playground

Special Education teacher Cindy Newman can't say enough about Spring Creek elementary's new playground.

"For our children, this playground has a fully ramped system. There's only one area that you have to go up steps to get to."

The faculty at the school has wanted a playground that's accessible for all students for at least 10 years.

So the staff, parents, and members of the East Ridge Kiwanis club teamed up to try and find a way to make it a reality.

That's when Hamilton county Commissioner Curtis Adams stepped in.

"They was wanting me to help them with a fundraiser," remembers Adams.  

"It'll take you forever to raise 85-thousand dollars. So I just said, just like that, I said, we'll pay for all of it out of my discretionary funds, and so we started work on it."

That 85-thousand gave the school enough money to finish the project.

The playground was designed by Chattanooga based company Play Core, with all students in mind, according to Cindy Newman.

"The benefit to their company is that their ramps are not just A-D-A requirements, they are double wide so we can fit two mobile devices. Two walkers, or two wheelchairs can pass each other.  All children can play. This is the one aspect of life that we are equal, regardless of your disability."

Commissioner Curtis Adams is proud of all the work done to finish the playground.

"It was a wonderful feeling when you look at all those little kids and know what you're doing to help them. It was one of the best 85-thousand I've ever spent."
