ATLANTA (AP) — A former Department of Veterans Affairs employee has been sentenced to more than a year in prison after pleading guilty to theft of government funds.

Prosecutors say Zerry Feaster stole more than $80,000 from the department while working as a secretary. They say Feaster bought pre-paid gift cards with her government-issued credit card and used them to buy luxury accessories and jewelry and to gamble.

U.S. Attorney Sally Quillian Yates says the woman chose to steal rather than supporting men and women who have served the country honorably.

Feaster, a 46-year-old from Ellenwood, was sentenced to one year, one month in prison and must pay back more than $88,0000. She worked at the Police Services Division at the Atlanta VA Medical Center in Decatur.
