Ringgold, GA– Donna Jackson admits making a telephone call to Catoosa County school superintendent Denia Reese about cheerleader signs, but says that’s about the only part of the reports that are true.

Jackson, who has been the focus of a community’s ire due to rumors that she threatened legal action in order to get the signs containing Bible verses at Lakeview Fort Oglethorpe High School n Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia removed, has issued the following statement to help set the record straight.

“I did not call the superintendent and complain that the LFO cheerleaders’ signs violated federal law by promoting religion at a school function. I am not offended by Bible verses, much less by Bible verses displayed publicly.

“I would remind all who care about this issue, that the Bible condemns bearing false witness against a neighbor, as well as all forms of deceit, gossip and slander.

“I did call the superintendent to express concern that the cheerleaders’ signs be done in such a way that all involved were within the ever changing and very confusing lines drawn by the federal courts about such things. The issue was on my mind because of a school law class I took last
summer at the Christian university where I am working on my doctorate of education degree.

That university is Liberty University, founded by the late Dr. Jerry Falwell. One of my sons recently graduated from LFO and another one is in school there now, and I never said anything about the signs all these years.

“I am not an expert on what the law or judicial opinions will or will not allow, but we all know of horror stories involving court battles and divided communities. I called the superintendent with the hope of heading off the type of community division that hasty actions have now caused.

“I never used the word “complain,” “complaint,” “grievance” or any other word similar in meaning. I expressed concern that teachers could be subject to lawsuits or losing their jobs. My concern was a direct result of the class I took this summer.

"I neither intended nor expected her to take the drastic action that ensued.

“Only about two hours following that brief telephone conversation, I received an email from the superintendent that said the cheerleaders would no longer be allowed to display their signs. I was shocked, as many of my neighbors in this community were. I was further shocked by the attempts to pass that decision off as somehow the result of me complaining about the unconstitutionality of the cheerleaders’ signs. This is absolutely false.

“It is my hope that the school will see to it that all students are able to express themselves in such a way that they and the teachers who invest their lives in them are protected from potential lawsuits by some person, group or governmental body seeking to deny that God-given and
Constitutionally-guaranteed right.”

Jackson will be a guest on the Clan Ceilidh radio show on Thursday night, October 1 at st 6:30 p.m. The Clan Ceilidh is a local interest program and can be heard on WAAK 94.7 FM, or on the internet at http://waak.catt.com/ . The live program will be recorded and rebroadcast periodically.

We Have the Right

Christans must stand together in these times where hate mongers have all the rights - one person can question our rights and the result can be, 10,000 people in a giving area can lose their free will to be a Christian. Something is desperately wrong with this when the miniority of devil worshipers can over ride the christian beliefs of the majority and this is SAD.

What if you were in a

What if you were in a country where your faith was the minority opinion?

Find your majority of thinking

Go where the majority think like you think and leave where you're not wanted.

A 2,000 year old myth has no

A 2,000 year old myth has no place in an institute of learning. Period.

The myth is in your mind

GOD is not a myth. We have his letters and his artifacts and the fact that the BIBLE is still the top selling book in the world ought to tell you something. common sense rules. You obviouly have a mental problem or your very naive.

So when are you quitting

So when are you quitting school?

This is getting ridiculous!

Please stop talking about this stupid garbage. It is old news and nobody cares any more. It was stupid when it started and now it is just pathetic that people cant let it go. You are a christian thats great but you have to understand that just as you have your right to your beliefs so does everybody else. It is not about free will these people were displaying religious messages at a school function. They were in the wrong. Nobody is trying to take away your right to be a christian. GET OVER IT ALREADY!!!!!!!!

you have a head problem

your the one who is having an issue of getting over it, or you wouldn't be even voicing your opinion of getting over it. Go see a shrink cause there is a whole world wide web of stuff for you to read and look at, but obviouly your stuck on just this, if you can't add something beneficial stay off this artical.

Oy Vey Y'all!

What took so long for the school superintendent to get around to banning this prima facie act of proselytizing at an official school function?

Who allowed the original misfeasance to become a "tradition?"

What if the banners said "Allahu Akbar!" or "Sa'arah B'Kos Mayim!"

How about "Arbeit macht frei!"

It sounds like a good time for some lessons in history, law and religion.

Oy vey y'all.

To: Oy Vey Y'all!

You ask what if the banners said, "Allahu Akbar" To which I say, GET OVER YOURSELF! This is America, there isn't a thing wrong with saying, "God is great" in any language. In this GREAT nation I don't have to share the same faith with anyone. In fact I don't have to have faith at all. However, I'm a proud Christian. I will not hide my faith and do not insist that anyone share my faith. This is the great melting pot, now melt already! There is room for everyone, every faith, and lack of faith. When I die I will be asked about my choices, not anyone elses. So it isn't my job OR YOURS to stand in judgement.

I agree. If they wish to

I agree. If they wish to do this on their own and NOT at an officially sanctioned school function, then I have no problem. But this absolutely has no place on the field during an official school event. And this is simply the law. You can complain all you want about how this country is going to h#ll, etc. etc. ad nauseum, but the law is the law, period. And yes, if you sanction having Christian signs, then you must also allow Muslim, Jewish, Buddhist, Atheist, and others to display messages as well. It leads down a road where you have a battle of signs and messages that distract from the fact that this is supposed to be a fun sporting event. Simply put, religious messages of any kind have no place at these events. The only reason this is even coming up now at all is because in this part of the country, officials have ignored the law and "looked the other way" for years, because they were the majority and no one was going to speak up. Well, things are changing and many people from different cultures and religions are moving into the area, and the law can no longer be ignored by the "good ole boy" system that seeks to exclude anyone who isn't just like them.

LFO CHeerleaders

I am proud of these young people. As a 1962 graduate with children graduating 1985 and 88, from LFO as well, we have had a proud heritage of Christian beliefs through the years. AS a community as a nation, we have got to start standing up for what is right. The saying is that if you don't use it you loose it. Freedom OF religion not FROM it is constitutional and so is free speech. And a little child shall lead them. Recently in the news we have seen 2 young people with a video recorder uncover and take down one of the largest corrupt organizations in this country doing what major news media and law enforcement could not do and they saved billions of our tax dollars. Support these young people and give a cheer, stand up for God, stand up for America, stand up for what is right. WE are the majority, make your voice known and take this country back!

Your last comment says it

Your last comment says it all; "We are the majority". So, in other words, since you are the majority, then you have the right to enforce your religious beliefs and customs on others who are in the minority? This is simply illegal under U.S. law. This event should be about sports, and that's all. No religious or anti-religious messages of any kind should be allowed, period. This should be done on private time, at a non-government sanctioned event. You can stand outside on the street and hold up a religious sign all day if you want, but if you bring it onto the football field, as an official part of the event, then it is wrong, and has no place because it is forcing others to listen to your message as a part of an official government event.

This is GODS country

This country was founded under GOD and if you don't like it, take your chicken little hinnies back to where you came and ran from. Don't come here for our protection. then try to change our beliefs when it's pretty obvious that your beliefs didn't work for you, or you wouldn't be invading our country for our protection and then try to infect GODS children with your crap. Point being get the heck out of GODS country if you don't won't to hear about or get to know him, and if you were born here quit running your flapping lips and fidgety fingers and leave GODS country and go where you think you might belong cause this is GODS country. GOD and his people are proud of the cheerleaders of Lakeview, and of all our young people that are brave enough to show you and any other no believers this is GOD our FATHERS country and you won't change it. In the Name of JESUS CHRIST I stand on these words and in the NAME OF THE FATHER,SON,AND HOLY SPIRIT may our FATHER discipline you and others that try to take away what is his, and you decieve yourself if you think you are happy without him in your life.

Banners

The problem was created when the cheerleaders brought the banners on the field & made them part of the football game - a school-sponsored event. All the players, whether Christian, or of some other faith (or no faith), were then expected to run thru the religiously-themed banners. Even if no one complained, it doesn't mean there weren't some who were uncomfortable with it. We all know how harsh people can be to those who "don't fit in". I think it's commendable these kids feel strongly about their faith & they could certainly have a get-together before or after the game, but completely voluntary. Anyone in the stands is free to hold a placard with a Bible verse too, if so moved (remember the guy with the John 3:16 sign at the NFL games). I grew up in the community and graduated from LFO & my family was at church every Sunday & Wednesday. We had the old-fashioned banners with "Go Warriors, De-Fang the Tigers" or something like that. I managed to keep my faith & my school spirit.

Keep Focused........

Parents.. You need to have a discussion with your children. They are turning a good thing into something ugly by teasing and mocking others that are of a different denomination. In the Gospel of John, we are told, "to all who received him [referring to Jesus], to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.". Please don't let this continue. Help your kids to stay focused on God and his will. It is not for us to judge others.

She sounds sincere, give her a break

This girl sounds sincere; give her a break, my fellow Christians! Innocent until proven guilty...if we want that, we must extend it to others. But here was her mistake: There was really no reason to question if the students or school would be liable for a violation of "separation of church and state" - because students who voluntarily do this without being co-erced by teachers TOTALLY HAVE THE FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHT TO DO SO. Besides, the Constitution guarantees religious free speech...it does NOT guarantee freedom from HEARING or SEEING someone's freedom of speech! That's what people don't understand today.

Pointless

Im a christian, I have kids in a neighboring school system (not LFO) but in Catoosa, I don't care for Denia Reese at all.. That being said I do know there are rules she has to follow.. and if this issue is brought to her attention, wherever it came from, she has to address it and follow the law on it.

My big question/confusion here is if this Donna Jackson really ONLY wanted to inquire about the law and had NO OTHER underlying reason for asking about it,,, why in the WORLD would she call the superintendent and not a ... ummm I dont know...... LAWYER?????

If I have a law question,, my first thought would not be to call the school.. just seems fishy to me that she was not trying to get something started or plant a seed there.

Personally I think it got way too much media attention and if this many people would get this worked up about something like homelessness or chronically ill children instead of signs that, in the end, are torn up and thrown away,,,,, then God would be just as blessed, if not more, and the lives of lots of people would be made better.

Just my opinion.

Where's this lady from?

All I can say is she's more than insane!!! I'm sure none of these kids had a rope tied around there neck making them do this. It took 1 person to start this drama & it's absolutly CRAZY.

She's from America. Maybe

She's from America. Maybe you should read the law yourself instead of the good ole' boy, look the other way, laws that have been the norm in this part of the country for years.

ft oglethorp cheerleader banners

thank GOD that there are still christian teens that are not ashamed to praise and worship GOD in public,i wonder if this woman would be so eager to sound off if the subject were on homosexuality, also could this woman be an athiest? i say get on your knees woman.

Did you not read this

Did you not read this article? Not only was the overtone apologetic, but she even stated, "I am not offended by Bible verses, much less by Bible verses displayed publicly." How could you make such an audacious claim (or question) that she'd be an Atheist? She was merely stating her concern that this situation COULD be taken down a long legal road that could have the possibility to divide the community and cause a great deal of legal strife. Her only fault was being an inquisitive intelligent person who wanted to delve deeper into the legal education she had received last year.

Its served a purpose

it doesnt matter the outcome. Its the impact its had on the community. Something like this has to happen before our youth gets vocal! I am a cheer coach and educator in a neighboring county. I used it in a lesson this week. The action taken and the controversy spreads his word more. Let them keep debating. Its inspiring. Let the teams choose to pray individually or the squad as a group before the intro of the game. YOU CANT STOP THAT!

It's Time for Soldiers

It's going to take people who are willing to do as the Lord commanded,to forsake ALL to follow Him. It's easy to sit at home and protest. Jesus' followers went to jail, were burned in furnaces, and nailed to crosses. The modern day disciples will be shorn of their worldly goods and cast into the United States Bureau of Prison's worst accomodations for standing for their faith. Their cities will be pillaged by this imperial government's fines, then run by their occupation dictators as Pittsburgh's and several other cities already have been. Are you ready? Are you WILLING to do your Lord's work on Earth, no matter the cost?

me thinks thou dost protest

me thinks thou dost protest too much
