MCMINN COUNTY, TN, (WDEF)-The iconic Calhoun paper mill has been one of the largest employers between Chattanooga and Knoxville for over half a century.
Folks in McMinn County are excited by the news where only a matter of years ago unemployment rates were at 14%.
Kathy Knight, Executive Director of McMinn County Economic Authority."We are down to the 8% mark right now, any more jobs we can add and investment e can get strengthens our work force and those that are unemployed to find employment"
Knight says their location has been a big factor in attracting and growing business.
"We have industrial land available we have all the amenities of two large cities, we have the interstate access, we have US41, we are actually at a great location for industrial expansion as we have a strong industrial base already"
Mayor Gentry sees this as a thumbs up for the community as a whole.
"A multi-national company that McMinn County's work-force is competitive globally, this expansion could have taken place at one of their other locations but they chose McMinn County"
He feels local work ethic has played a big part.
"Aptitude here that seems appropriate for manufacturing they have just have a tough work ethic that kind of comes from the agrarian background, folks came to work knowing what it meant to put in more than the 8 hour work day"
Resolute has newspaper and newsprint clients in 100 countries.
They own more than 40 pulp and paper mills in North America and South Korea.
Commissioner J.W McPhail also welcomed the news saying he hoped this expansion would encourage other companies to chose McMinn County to do business.
