CHATTANOOGA, Tennessee(WDEF) - Police have made an arrest in connection to the Monday night shooting on 15th Avenue near Dodds Avenue.
Claude Alvin Thomas, 40 of Chattanooga was charged with attempted first degree murder and aggravated assault.
Police say he shot Jonathan Smith, 31, in the neck.
According to the arrest affidavit, it all started when Thomas and Smith got into a heated argument inside a residence on the 3900 block of 15th Avenue. During the argument, Thomas was reportedly holding a 9mm pistol. Witnesses told police the argument continued outside the residence as the Smith was trying to leave. Smith then got into a car with a woman. Thomas allegedly followed both of them to the car and fired one round into Smith's neck while Smith sat in the passenger seat.
Witnesses say Smith and the female driver pulled into the Big Daddy's convenience store parking lot in the 3900 block of Dodds Avenue to get help.
"She was sitting down on the ground with his head in her lap and she kept screaming his name, Jonathan, Jonathan, please answer me baby please Jonathan and there was no response. And there was blood all around her and all in the car," said Destiny Wooten who was a witness.
Smith underwent surgery Monday night at Erlanger Hospital where he was last listed in critical condition.
Thomas remains in jail on a half million dollar bond. His next court day is scheduled for November 26th.
