(WDEF) It looks like the new Veterans Clinic in Athens is one step closer to becoming a reality.
An Athens radio station reported the contract has been signed to build it in the Cate's Corner Shopping Center on Decatur Pike.
The report added the target opening date for the clinic is early fall.
It also said hiring of staff members for the new clinic is now underway.
Friday we headed to Athens to find out what this new clinic would mean for McMinn County.
County Mayor John Gentry told us, "We're just excited.  We know that the time is drawing nigh for the clinic to be located in McMinn County.  We have roughly about 5,000 veterans that are currently going between Knoxville and Chattanooga sites.  That's obviously going to be a relief to them that they don't have to travel such a great distance."
We tried to get a hold of McMinn County Veterans Affairs Director Deborah Cox.
But she would not make herself available for comment.
