These voices may all have a different tone or pitch, but each and every one share a common message; a message of celebration.

Ronald Harris, with Blue Cross, Blue Shield of Tennessee, adds, "We like to come together this time of year and recognize the contributions not only of African Americans, but the progress we've made as a people, city, and company."

Blue Cross, Blue Shield of Tennessee is celebrating Black History Month, so who better to bring in than James Mapp, a civil rights pioneer.

Mapp adds, "If I had to do it, I'd do it all over again."

Mapp first came to Chattanooga when he was just 10 years old, and saw first hand the inequality and the struggles.

In 1960, he had trouble enrolling his kids in an all white school.

Mapp says, "Some 14 or 15 Howard High School students marched on downtown."

Mappp says that was the first time he saw students participate at that level, and he is glad he still sees it more than five decades later.

Harris adds, "It's an opportunity to draw closer together, to learn more about one another, and that's very important."

Important to our future, they say, and to future generations as well.

This is the 10th year Blue Cross, Blue Shield of Tennessee held this event.
