CHATTANOOGA, Tennessee(WDEF) - A dark and sweaty aerobics room filled with several dozen people were not only working on their cardiovascular health but also helping less fortunate Cleveland city school kids.

It happened Friday night inside the Rush Gym on Lee Highway.

Cleveland School district PTO president and Rush Zumba instructor Kelly Reise wanted to do something about the number of children who are using plastic grocery bags to hold their books and school supplies.

"I thought what a better way to fill that need than to have all my ladies from the Zumba classes to come out for an evening of fun, booty bumping and bring in backpacks," Reise said.

In addition to bringing new book bags, booty bumping participants also brought in brand new school supplies and there was even a fundraiser to help pay for more backpacks and things children might need for this school season.

For Reise, the reality of seeing less fortunate school kids struggle to hold onto their books when arriving and leaving school grounds was too painful to watch.

"Those children are getting on the bus with their little plastic bags with their lunch inside and everything else. I think this event will help round out their education a little bit better if they could feel the part like everyone else and have a cool backpack for the school year," Reise said before making another statement that brought her to the brink of tears.

"I've been able to give my children a lot and we're very fortunate and blessed but not everyone is and that's why we're here today and hopefully we can make some ones day a little bit brighter," she said.

When it was all said and done, Reise collected 30 backpacks and about $120 in school supplies.
