CHATTANOOGA, TN (WDEF) - UTC professors say the box turtle population in Tennessee is in trouble.

That's why they conducted a box turtle survey Friday morning at Enterprise South Nature Park.

The animals are protected as a native species in Tennessee.

The UTC Biology department is only one of three entities working with them.

Department leaders say they'll track the turtles with special equipment and a wildlife detection dog team.

Jeremy Hooper, a UTC graduate student, says, "Well, they're trying to figure out how the turtles use the landscape; that's their ecology. So, how they go across the landscape, what habitats they're using and how broad of an area that they roam."

Several other groups were on hand Friday for this annual event.
