CHATTANOOGA, TN. (WDEF) -- It's rare these days to find doctor who will do house calls.
It's even more unusual to find a veterinarian who'll come and treat your pets in the home.
But Dr. Shannon Dawkins spends her days making life a lot easier for pet-owners.
Dr. Shannon Dawkins has been doing this for about three months.
Traveling from place to place and providing veterinarian services without the need for a bricks and mortar homebase.
DR. SHANNON DAWKINS, CLAWS & PAWS MOBILE HEALTHCARE "I think it's a great service for anyone who has a pet that doesn't travel well...cats in particular..older dogs that can be hard to get into the car...I recently had a very large German Sheppard..the owner could get him up ..that wasn't even a possibility."
ON this particular day, Clare Mills has a new dog.
It's a stray and she's working its vet needs into her busy day.
CLARE MILLS, PET OWNER "This one gets anxiety with the vets..and I knew that you know, establishing a relationship with a mobile vet would be better...than trying to take him somewhere new. "
Dr. Dawkins provides most of the services you can get at a vet's office, but she tells pet-owners if the animal is hurt, or needs immediate attention head for the veterinarian's office.
In the home though, the pets don't feel stressed.
DR. SHANNON DAWKINS "For most of the exam they don't even realize I'm examining them. I think they think I'm just petting them and saying hello."
CLARE MILLS "As soon as you let someone into your home it lets the animal know they are a friend and that they are part of the pack..and that they are ok. You don't have to worry about any of that stress."
Dr. Dawkins also has a client list that includes ferrets, rabbits, birds and even snakes---but not the dangerous ones.
DR. SHANNON DAWKINS "I do have a number of reptile clients but they're all things like boa constructors and bull pythons ...Actually very friendly reptiles."
But mostly its family critters like dogs and cats.
Dr. Dawkins says she also advises pet-owners about care and nutrition.
And, she adds, her service is no more expensive than taking your pet to a clinic.
