Chattanooga man injured in duplex fire

CHATTANOOGA, Tennessee(WDEF) - A Chattanooga man is now listed in stable condition after a fire swept through his duplex apartment.

Nearly 12 hours a a fire erupted inside a duplex on the 2100 block of Daisy Street, David Ursy stood in disbelief while looking at what was once his home.

"I can't believe if happened. I was at my friends house and one of my neighbors came and got me at 1AM. I came back and it was already burnt. My neighbor is in the hospital. I hope he lives," Ursy said.

Several neighbors told WDEF the didn't know a fire started until fire trucks started arriving on their block.

"I saw fire come out the side window going toward another house," said Tarashenda Harris.

Firefighters found an unresponsive elderly man in a bathroom. Several neighbors identified the victim as Allen Smith. Authorities say he suffered serious injures from smoke inhalation.

"They laid him down and immediately I was like oh my god. I thought he was gone," Harris said.

Smith was taken to a burn center in Augusta Georgia. His condition was upgraded to stable.

"It makes me feel sad because he was a good neighbor. He was good to me and my kids," said neighbor Rozenie Thompson

"He was real nice. He was 65 years old and he lived alone. It was just him and his dog," Ursy said.

Unfortunately, his dog Chester died from smoke inhalation.

Cause of the fire is still under investigation.
