COLLEGEDALE,TN, (WDEF)-After a year long battle Krista Cooper will now receive benefits as the spouse of Collegedale Police detective Kat Cooper.

Krista and Kat have campaigned for nearly a year to be recognized as a couple.
She added, "America is taking the right steps, you know, this is a good start"
Chattanooga City Councilman Chris Anderson applauds the decision of the Collegedale Commissioners.
"If Someone chooses to serve their community, they should be treated with the same equality and fairness as everyone else"
East TN folk are divided on the Collegedale decision.

District 7 community activist Mahmood Abdullah wants his representatives to spend less time working on East TN's gay rights issues.
"Gayism is wrong i think radio it was messaging the fact that some may so been born that way because man being tampering with the genes of people"
If leaders approve the change in August, the town will be the only one among the state's 346 cities to cover domestic partnerships.
Chattanooga City Councilman Chris Anderson added that he hopes similar reforms can happen in the Scenic City in the coming months and years.
