CHATTANOOGA, TN, (WDEF)-Vincent Boozer, Hope for The Inner City,"you got a lot of hurt people out there, hurt people tend to want to hurt people and they don't have any choices but to join these gangs because we are not offering any alternatives"
Boozer believes that Chattanooga's gang violence is all about a lack of opportunity before and after prison time.
"You put a man or young lady out on the streets and you tell them to be a productive citizen or society but they have a record and they can't go get basic things like a job to feed their family then they going to resort back to what they been doing which is crime"
Former gang member Kenyell Jefferson says this all starts from home long before judges and arrest warrants.
"Not probably having your dad or mom, nobody in your life, nobody trying to teach you right from wrong just you getting love from them you think that's the best love so you doing what they doing"
He feels elected officials both in the scenic city and beyond need to follow the Hope for the Inner City Model and similar programs to bring about change.
"Kids and stuff for teens to do, more stuff to go to, summer programs stuff for us to do"
With so many shootings happening in and around East Lake many in the area are getting fed up.
The elderly and family members here at East lake say gang shootings, murders and violence do not represent the views that so many in the community hold dear"
Jessica,Mother of 2, East lake Resident,"Most of the violence that goes on has nothing to do with the people live here, it's the outsiders coming in the inside, they really aint nothing you can do about that, they try do a trespass list but nobody ever enforce that for real"
