Hamilton County commissioners tell us an opening prayer has been a tradition of theirs for decades.

In fact, each commissioner takes a turn to read or have someone else read a prayer at every meeting.

But recently, someone complained to The Freedom From Religion Foundation.

That is a Wisconsin-based group that works to keep religion and government separate.

That group says in a written statement, "What's the purpose of invoking Jesus' name before discussing whether to raise sewer and water rates."

Well, we caught up with Commissioner Mitch McClure by phone to get his reaction to that.

McClure adds, "I'm somewhat shocked by the fact that someone would file a complaint because to my knowledge no one has filed a complaint with the county commission, and it would appear to me that the complaint should have come to the county commission first rather than going to the group in Wisconsin."

McClure also says his board is not breaking an laws because they are not trying to establish any type of religion.

WE COMPLETELY SUPPORT COUNTY COMMISSIONER BANKSTON COMMENTS ON THE RIGHT TO PRAY WE NEED MORE PEOPLE THAT WOULD STAND UP FOR THEIR RIGHTS AND THE PEOPLE WHO VOTED FOR THEM. OUT OF ALL THE COMMISSIONERS HE HAD THE GUTS TO STAND UP FOR HIS RIGHTS AND THE RIGHT OF GOD. AMEN TO HIM AND MORE LIKE HIM, SINCE HE WAS THE ONLY ONE TO STAND UP.
