DADE COUNTY, Georgia(WDEF) - Detectives are trying to find the person or people responsible for destroying several air conditioners that were connected to the Berean Baptist Church.

$1000's of worth of damage was caused when crooks broke into several air conditioners to steal copper.

"I'm guessing they're going to have to come up with another $25,000 to $30,000 to get their system back the way it was," said Detective Don Hicks.

According to investigators, this kind of theft can be lethal because electricity was still being supplied to each unit. Detectives are convinced the person or people responsible knew exactly what they were doing and were fully aware of the risk they were taking.

"They knew what to cut. What places to cut to keep from getting shocked or electrocuted," Hicks said.

Stealing copper from air conditioners has become a growing trend in Dade County. Investigators say the usual perpetrators are drug addicts who are desperate to get high.

"These people need money to buy drugs and they'll destroy a $2,000 of $3,000 unit to get $50," Hicks said.

Dade County authorities say they desperately want to get the person or people responsible for these thefts off the streets. If anyone has information about this case that may lead to an arrest and conviction, they are asked to call the Dade County Sheriff's Office at 707-657-3233.
