Chattanooga, TN, (WDEF)-Jasper man Alan Poole is facing charges of attempted first degree murder after police say he shot his wife in the face.

Regina McDevitt of The Partnership says domestic violence and abuse can escalate to a homicide situation quicker than you think.

"Financial abuse, emotional abuse, psychological abuse and at some point a trigger occurs that creates an event that is physical and violent again those increase over time, typically the first time that happens it may just be a slap or a push"

Her view is echoed by UTC Professor and Counselor Dr Elizabeth O'Brien who says Tennessee has a problem it needs to address.

"Or low consequences I guess I should say in terms of how the community reacts to this type of incident then it tends to continue and that is problematic and i'm concerned as to how the community is handling the situation.">[Duration:0:10]

Dr O'Brien added that more needs to be done with education for young people to show them domestic abuse should never be tolerated.

"If dads beating up on mom and you've got a young child say it's a boy, that's what men do, or if it's a girl, that's what i should expect from a man whom im in a relationship with, so it can be very pervasive and follow a kid throughout their life"

Jon Fish instructs women right here in the Tennessee Valley on how to protect themselves from domestic violence and abuse.

"If somebody chooses to pick on you or attack you in any way that could harm you it's because they believe they can."

Jon demonstrated a scenario he teaches in his class where a woman has a gun pointed at her head by a partner or husband and can disarm him quickly if asked to raise her hands.

All parties we spoke to said there is always a way out and mothers in our region should not be put in situation where a gun is ever pointed at them.
