Health officials say our elderly were more at risk of getting the flu in the past three months then they have in recent years.
Sharon Goforth of Hamilton County Health Department is concerned for those in the Tennessee Valley.

They are somewhat puzzled as to why one particular component of the vaccine this year is not working anywhere near what they would hope it would work in our elderly and they again are looking but they don't have an answer to that question yet".

Chattanooga Pharmacist John Swann feels that unfortunately the public has to be realistic about the success rate of these vaccines.

"Once you have had the immunization sometimes the strains, well it might not cover every strain that is there. So its not a guarantee you wont get it, sometimes it will keep it from being as bad and hopefully keep you from getting it at all."

The success rate across all age groups ranges is normally between 50 to 70 percent, but this year's vaccine only reduced flu by 56%.
