Southerners have long proudly flown their confederate flags.
"It's a symbol for people that stood up to the government," said Benjamin Guerrini.
But should it be flaunted on state license plates?
The battle flag is featured on a plate approved by the Georgia Department of Revenue this week.
It's an updated version of a previously available plate that has a much smaller image of the flag.
"It's a very touchy subject, you know on the black side I think it might be a little weird, but then on the white side I think people are gonna be proud of where they're from," said Stephen Wrisley.
Spokesman of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference Maynard Eaton publicly spoke out against it in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution saying "To display this is reprehensible, We don't have license plates saying 'Black Power.'"
Civil war enthusiast and Chickamauga Battlefield Museum owner Stephen McKinney says the flag isn't meant to be offensive.
"The American Civil War is a fact.  It lasted four years, almost 700,000 men were killed, there were brave and good men on both sides. So to single out the confederate flag as something that is a symbol of something it wasn't is just wrong," said McKinney.
The plates will cost 80 dollars and 10 dollars of that goes to the Georgia Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans.
