This week is Severe Weather Awareness Week in Georgia.
Officials want to take the time to educate people about it to prevent death or injury.
WDEF News 12's Mandy Odom has more in tonight's Safe Families Report.
Whitfield County Emergency Management is looking at different aspects of severe weather everyday this week.
Monday is Family Preparedness and Weather Radios.
The director of Whitfield County Emergency Management Claude Craig says it's important to be prepared because in an emergency they might not be able to get to you very quickly.
He says, "Be prepared to be self sustaining. Have a kit ready. Have a to go box, what we call a go box. If you have to leave your residence for something for an evacuation of any types, have a go box to where you can survive on your own for 72 hours."
Tuesday, focuses on thunderstorm safety including straight line winds and Wednesday looks at tornadoes.
It's important to have a weather radio and get the weather watches and warnings.
Craig says, "A winter storm we're going to know for about 3 days before it hits what's going to happen. Severe thunderstorm or a tornado you got about 30 seconds to do whatever you're gonna do when a tornado's approaching. You don't have much time."
Thursday is lightning safety.
Claude says to go inside when you hear thunder.
Friday looks at flooding.
Remember that it only takes 2 feet of water to move an average car.
WDEF News 12's Chief Meteorologist Patrick Core says we need to pay attention to any weather watches or warnings.
He says, "It's on people's minds, and that's a good thing, and the more it's on people's minds the more lives we save."
