SIGNAL MOUNTAIN, Tennessee(WDEF) - A hiker is lucky to be alive after she fell while attempting to climb down a rock wall.

It happened Saturday afternoon near the Falling Water Nature Trail in Walden on Signal Mountain.

Shelby Mudd, 18, along with three other hikers reportedly left the trail on state park lands to go swimming at a popular lake on private property. To get there meant climbing down a rock wall via rope but disaster struck during the climb down.

"I had gone down first. Shelby stepped on a rock above me and the rock hit my head and they were afraid that I might have had a concussion so they were coming down to check on me then a larger rock fell which is what Shelby was on. She fell down the whole cliff and rolled down and a stump stopped her," said Anna Claire who was one of the four hikers in the group with Mudd.

According to rescuers from Walden Fire Department, Mudd fell close to 100 feet into a ravine and injured her ankle to the point where she was unable to walk.

"I just felt very helpless when she was falling because there was nothing I could do. I'm just happy she's alive at this point," said Claire

Rescuers from several agencies spent more than three hours tending to Mudd's  injuries and pulling her to safety.

"It's a challenge. The man power and equipment required to get her out of that type of situation is a challenge," said Walden Fire Department spokesman Sib Evans.

The Saturday afternoon rescue of an injured hiker was the second rescue in 15 days from near the same location.

Area residents say hikers need to be aware that going off trail in that area can result in some serious and at times deadly consequences.

Looks like rescue squad could use some exercise and a work out.
