CHATTANOOGA, TN (WDEF) - Flames, coconuts, and champagne; it's not your usual ribbon cutting ceremony, but it's commonplace for these folks at Mahindra.
Mahindra is the number one selling tractor company in the world.
Chattanooga Mayor Jim Coppinger, says, "I want to say to Mahindra, thank you for choosing this area."
The company chose Chattanooga to build a new assembly and distribution center.
It will create more than 50 jobs and grow a partnership with Chattanooga Tractor, family-owned business.
Randy Topping, President of Chattanooga Tractor, says, "We want to have the capacity to pull 8-900 units a month out of this facility. To do that, we're going to have some more people."
That's triple what they're making now.
Topping adds, "They're growing market shares so fast we can't keep up, so we had to build a new separate facility."
In the last 13 months, Chattanooga Mayor Andy Berke, says more than 2,700 jobs were created in Chattanooga.
Mayor Berke adds, "We're at our lowest unemployment level in more than six years."
That's why Hamilton County Mayor Jim Coppinger also feels like this partnership is extremely important to our economy.
Mayor Berke adds, "We're creating good middle class jobs in our community. That's how you build a great city."
Topping says, "Chattanooga is a great point. We got the interstate systems here, we got the potential for rail, you see we got the spur running through here. It continues to grow and we got options."
Mahindra will be closing its Calhoun facility because of this new endeavor.
