TRENTON, GA (WDEF-TV) A Trenton couple said their neighbor shot their dog in the head and tried to kill it, but the neighbor said he warned them that if they didn't handle the situation, he would.

Tonya Duckworth said it all began Saturday morning.

"I let my dogs out at 7:29 a.m. as I always do out of the garage, and at 7:35 a.m. he texted me and said, 'Sorry Tonya I put Katie down," said Duckworth.

That neighbor, Randy Lawson, said he warned her after an incident involving his dog, T.K., and Tonya's dog, Katie, and that happened two weekends ago.

"Her dog jumped on our dog and bit her," said Lawson

T.K. had to undergo surgery, and Randy said this wasn't the first time the dogs had problems. The neighbors talked about how to deal with the situation, but they both remembered two different conversations.

Lawson said, "She said do you want me to put my dog down, I said Tonya that's a decision for you to make not me."

Duckworth said, "He said, well I just want you to put Katie down, I want you to kill her, and I said I can't do that Randy."

Lawson said he left her a clear message.

"I'm not going to allow your dog to do this to my dog again."

A week later, Lawson claims Katie attack T.K. again, and he tried to solve the problem himself.

"I went in the house and got the gun, and when I shot her dog, it was on my property."

Tonya says she found the dog in the garage suffering and bleeding.

She remembers the last word Randy said to her after he shot her dog.

"He was standing there drinking coffee, and he said well I told you if you didn't put her down I would."

Tonya already filed paperwork to have a warrant out for Randy.

She says she wants to see justice for the cruel act against her dog.

So sorry my last post posted 3 times but update on my little Katie bug, she can't eat crunchy foods because of her jaw broken but she is eating mushy food by hand and when we go visit with her she wags her tail when she see us so that makes me very very happy. Still can't bring her home yet. :-( but very excited when we get to.

I was concerned about the condition of Katie and emailed the newsreporter for an update. For all who might be interested Katie did not die, she has a broken jaw and is now deaf. Such a sad situation. I am praying that all works out.

Agreed aryfrosty, you must keep your dogs contained on your property and or under your control in's very clear that was not happening and nothing will come of the warrent. Another owner who got their dog killed by being irresponsible.

I am the lady that got her dog shot and we lived as family here and I took his dogs to the vet and my dogs were always welcome at his house and his at mine. I've been cleaning for this man for 4 yrs off and on and living as family and he didn't even see my dog attack his he just assumed that she did because both dogs didn't care for one another's but all our other dogs played very well together and his dog didn't undergo surgery either. His other dog pretty much lives here at my home and even the day he shot my dog his dog remained here at my home. We were close enough that he could come to me about anything but did not choose to , I can't help he is not being honest.

I certainly would not want this man for a neighbor, nor would I want to be this man. He is going to receive a lot of negative reactions to this. Why not call the authorities and have them handle it? Gun play between neighbors is never a good idea and always ends badly. He has made a lot of enemies and his name has been uploaded to the cruelty to animals website.

That lady is going to get embarrassed if she keeps whining about this. The law requires her to keep her dog under control and on HER property. The dog was on the neighbors property and he really didn't have to warn her...he could have just shot it the first time it attacked his dog. She's pretty lucky. If her dog had attacked a person or a kid she would be facing a lot of problems. Not sure why people think they can just let their dogs run loose and do what they want to. She'll end up getting sued and having to foot the legal bills for all of this.
