JASPER, Tennessee(WDEF) - The Tennessee Bureau of Investigations has identified the man who was fatally shot by a Marion County Deputy.

John Shanks, 29, was pronounced dead on scene after a confrontation with an unidentified deputy.

It happened Saturday morning in a wooded area near Lock and Dam Road.

According to both a TBI spokesperson and Sheriff "Bo" Burnett, a deputy was called to a home to investigate a suspicious man who was seen on some ones back porch. Investigators say when the deputy arrived, Shanks tried to steal a car then ran into the woods with the deputy in pursuit.

At some point, Shanks reportedly pulled a gun on the deputy and refused to obey commands from the deputy to drop his weapon. That's when the deputy fatally shot Shanks.

According to investigators, Shanks did not fire his weapon at the deputy and it's unclear how many times the deputy shot him.

The incident remains under investigation.

Family members say the McCallie boarding school alumni and Ole Miss University graduate had a promising future. But a Meth addiction that started last year began to make his life spiral out of control.

Last May,  Shanks was arrested after he stole an ambulance from Erlanger hospital. His family blames the drug addiction for that incident.

On Thursday morning, in an effort to keep him out of prison,  he was ordered by a judge to go to CADAS Rehab facility for 28 days. But later that day, he reportedly escaped from CADAS. Then two days later, a confrontation with a law enforcement officer ended his life. A close family member had one message for the public.

"This is the end result of a meth addiction. My brother died over a meth addiction. Do everything you can to help any one who is on meth. That meth is not a joke," she said.
